I work as a courtesy clerk, grunt, slave, whatever you call it, I've been there for about a year now and all i do is the same thing day after day; lot duty, sweeps, bag, go backs. Every. Friggin. Day. The only "change" is that I may have sweeps or lot duty first. That's it. I'd like to do something else than the same damn thjng day after day after day. And the checkers seem all high and mighty. For once, I'd like to tell then to do things themselves without getting slammed for it like all the other dept get to do. Also the same with outer depts. they make a mess, I'd love to tell them to clean it themselves. Why can't courtesy clerks get more variety in their daily duties? Like one day do their normal duties; the next day something different that they are still allowed to do per contract agreement...

That is what CCs are hired to do:  lot duty, sweeps, bag, go backs.  I can't believe you don't clean the bathrooms, bottle room or take trash to the dumpster.

Do it until you can do it twice as fast with your eyes closed. 

The only variety I can think of is pulling all the Hawian punch off the shelf and cleaning the shelf real well.  Or, checking expiration dates in the condiment aisle.  I challenge you to go to the bake aisle while doing go backs, reach into the back of the shelf for Kroger fat free condensed milk(light blue can) and check the expiration date.  Might as well check the Carnation milk too(green and blue label).  Regular Carnation sells fast enough. 

I am not sure what age you are.  Most managers do not want anyone under 18 working in the store departments.  But, if you are up for the challenge and communicate well with customers, they might sneak you into produce as a clerk.  It will be the same routine day in and day out with slight variances.  If this interests you, ask your store manager if there is a way you can become a produce clerk.  Let them know you are looking for a challenge.

everyone used to start out as a bagger for the most part its how it used to work and once you learned and worked hard you reward was getting promoted to a department and making more money. but between the unions stupidity and kroger thats all gone to hell. You used to have to wait in line to get promoted to meat or produce some one had to retire or die pretty much for a spot to open up. you used to get promoted and make a couple more dollars more per hour now you can get promoted and make less than you did bagging LOL sucks to see the whole thing ruined. just learn as much as you can while at kroger specially from the older people that been around awhile then do yourself a favor and get a job some where else.

Yep, cashiers cannot even leave their checkstands. EVEN to go home. They MUST wait for their relief or lock off IF AND ONLY IF it slows down long enough to do so.

And depts? When you move to a dept you'll be doing the "same old thing day after day" as well. It just seems different because you do not actually work in a dept per se

yeah, if you don't like doing the same job over and over again, the departments won't be any better for you. CC's actually get more variety than some departments. For example, Produce is essentially breaking down trucks and stocking their merchandise, and repeat. Not saying it's an easy job though. Just that they have a routine to it from what i see.

Pft, yeah if you don't like repetition, then you will hate the departments. My poor hands get so damn tired of slicing meat for (sometimes really ungrateful) customers.

I'd say that's plenty of variety.  If you worked in frozen or dairy all you'd be doing is putting stuff on shelves.  Meat department and produce are pretty much the same thing.  Deli you're either frying chicken or waiting on the counter.  Bakery has some variety if you can bake or if you know how to decorate cakes but you're still just basically filling shelves.  The one good thing about working in other departments is your breaks and lunches aren't as structured as they are on the front end.  In non-service departments such as drug/gm you pretty much take your breaks and lunches whenever you feel like it. For other departments where you might have to wait on customers you just have to make sure you're not going to leave the department shorthanded.

I personally think every department (excluding management) is repetitive. Fuel: You stand all day inside a small kiosk, clean, help people at pumps, close at the end of the night.. change trash in trash cans, etc.

I mean.. In every department you're bound to have a little bit of change during certain days, but usually it's the same things day in and day out. Moving to another department won't fix the problem.

I'm sorta lucky, I suppose.

Some days I do chicken, others are days where I fill in for the chef AND do chicken.

Once in a while I get thrown a bone and get to put away the truck.


I'll pretty much do anything to stay off a slicer.


But yes, any department is going to be repetitive. Today will just be a variation of yesterday. That's just how it goes.

 You are lucky.  Only way I get off a slicer is if I hide in the bathroom.
