I was asked to cover a shift this weekend inside as cashier. I told them I didn't know how to run the registers inside and they said that they'll give me two hours of training the day before the shift I'm supposed to cover. So my question is.. How hard is it to learn the registers? I work in the FC and the register out there is quite easy and all touch screen.
Honestly, there are only a few main things you need to become familiar with, the rest you'll learn on as you go through asking questions:
* Voiding Items
* Price Adjusting Items
* Operator/Manager Overrides
* WIC Transactions (ask for help if you're even a little bit unsure on this one)
* Tendering Checks (I assume you never had to do that in Fuel, but it's pretty straight forward)
Those are going to be the most common things you encounter during transactions. Voiding items out that get double scanned or a customer decides they no longer want, adjusting prices to meet customer expectations ("Make It Right!"), when and how to perform overrides, and which ones require manager approval and which ones you can do yourself, and then WIC (since it's the start of a new month). Doing Checks as Tender is pretty easy, you just have to get used to franking the check and then putting it in your till (and under no circumstances ever hand a processed check back to a customer without a PIC/Manager expressly telling you to, that's an easy 3-day suspension at least).
Other than that, you should be able to get by through just asking questions if you need to. If you can master at least the first 3 things on that bullet list (or just become familiar with them even), you should be fine inside, as long as you have a PIC that is understanding of the fact that you haven't had formal training on the inside registers.
