I'm still a new hire, having been here only a month. This week I worked 24 hours, but my schedule for next week only gives me 12 hours. Is there a reason for the cut in hours? Should I be worried?
You're the lowest on the totem pole of seniority, so if the departments hours are lessened, yours will be the first to go. That's just how it works. Nothing to be worried about. They probably gave you more hours this week because someone else requested time off, something outside the norm.
Pft, I've been with the company for 9 months, and my hours jump around like a hyperactive kid. Be happy you're getting 12. I got 18 this week, and next week, I got a whole 8 hours.

^ This. I went from 34 hours one week to 12 the next. That's just the way the cookie crumbles, I guess.
All the new hires at my store are all "I'm getting 40 hours a week!" I'm all like "Yeah, you enjoy it while it lasts. Here soon you'll be down to like 16."

it really depends on your availability and if you come in when they ask.

From my experience, Hours fluctuate based on the time of year. At the start of spring (Middle of April) the hours increase until July 4th, then the hours plummet until the End of October, and stay fairly high until the Beginning of January, then they fall back down until April comes around again... and the cycle repeats.

My availability was open up until recently. The only time I got over 30 hours was when I was training, and the only time I got the 28 hours max (because insurance) was when someone went on vacation.
It got to the point where my gas costs were outnumbering my weekly check, so I ended up getting a second job. Unfortunately, many people either quit or have to pull a second job.
