Scheduled for 37 to 40 hours for 3 weeks in a row...

I've been scheduled for basically full-time for the past 2 weeks, and for next week.

I don't want full-time. I'm in college taking a few summer classes. I've asked to be cut back, but I was scheduled like that again. If it happens again, I'm putting in my 2 weeks notice.

I was hired to be part time. I don't want full time at all.

What can I do, other than quitting? I've been with Kroger for 1.5 years.

Have you tried putting requests in e-Schedule on Greatpeople.me for days off?

Have you tried putting in a new availability?

Is there anyone in your dept. that you can give away some of your shifts to, or is everyone maxed out and/or uninterested in picking up extra shifts?

If you've tried all the above, maybe you should give them your two weeks notice. If you do, they'll see you're serious, and if they really want to keep you, maybe then and there, they'll agree to work with you on your hours preference.

I've put requests on e-schedule, it doesn't help.

Everyone else is maxed out, except for 1 person, but he doesn't want the shifts either because he has a 2nd job.

I'll probably hand in my 2 weeks in 2 or 3 weeks, since I'll be temporarily moving.

Under my contract you do not have to work outside of your availability.  If they are scheduling you within what you told them you could work then there isn't much you can do but quit.  But, if you are unavailable certain hours or days then you don't have to work those days/hours.

put a request to only work 3 days a week. make sure your manager knows this and why.
if he/she denies you ask why, then if they still continue to give you too many hours I would maybe request to go to front end if you're not already. They are usually good with requests like that since they have more than 20 people on front end.
Since i'm not sure what your position is it may be a pay cut although most positions in the store are the same pay rate.

I was avaliable for 5 days a week, because my classes hadn't started. Once they started I put a request in to be cut down, but it wasn't approved.

I work in the meat and seafood, we only have 9 people including myself and the 2 managers.

That's probably why; they're short staffed and have too many hours to split.

Since the request wasn't approved, not showing up for your shifts will get you in more trouble. So you may have to put in your notice. If you have a choice between Kroger and an education, pick the education.

I'm telling my manager (when I see him tomorrow) that I won't be able to come in Monday, even though I'm scheduled, because I have too much schoolwork to do.

I'll also tell him if I can't get cut down to less than 20 hours a week, I will quit.

Hopefully he realizes that if I quit, they will be even more short-staffed...

the only person that will care is your dept head. Your store manager will not have to shouder any of the work.

Yeah, that's who I am seeing tomorrow. I only see my dept managers once, MAYBE twice a week.

I'm sure you have some kids in high school who work there and have restricted hours.  They work around their school schedule.  I would ask for the same consideration they have shown other employees who are/were in school.  I would be so mad if Kroger was not allowing me to seek higher education.  Sue them for age discrimination - under 18 can go to school - over 18 can't?

I don't get it. They will work around school schedules for kids under 18, but if you're an adult, to hell with higher education. But they don't pay these adults enough or give enough hours to justify holding off on education, so these adults have to get a second job (or third), but they won't work around a second job either. But yet, they brag "flexible hours".

Do they know you are going to school?  I don't really think they can not allow you time off to attend classes.

They do. I do get the 2 days off of that one of my classes is on, but my other class is online, and is about 8 hours of work (plus about 3 hours of reading, so the work makes sense) every other day. (The professor will post something on say, Monday, that is due by Thursday at 11:59PM. Then Thursday, more work is posted that is due Monday at 11:59PM). And that is for one of my classes, my other class is similar.

I told my manager today that I may not be able to come in tomorrow, or if I do, it will be late. I'm supposed to be in at 2, but I told him it may be 5 or 6 instead.

The "flexible hours" thing is such a lie.  Maybe if you only want to work 12 hrs a week but if you want to try to live off working at Kroger, forget it.

That's the thing... I want 12 hours a week.... but the whole store is so understaffed.

They've posted signs on EVERY DOOR (bathrooms, entrance doors, etc) saying they are hiring. And every 20 minutes they play the "Shop here, work here, grow your career here!" spiel on the radio, to get more people to apply.

It doesn't help that they only offer minimum wage to people when everyone else is paying $9/hour+(Walmart, for example). Refusing to stay competitive when it comes to pay really hurts employee morale and getting people who will actually work, but corporate doesn't care... it's all about those profit margins, baby!

Especially, when you've been working there for 6 years and are only making $.55 more than a kid fresh off the street.

I should be making close to $10/hour for the crap I've been put through over the years. With 6 vacations, instead of 2, and have 10 personal holidays, instead of 5.

They won't raise the pay rate until the contract expires.  How can they?

They need to revise the contract then, early. Because as it is, they're not gonna get new faces to work there, and if they do, they won't work for that little for the amount of **** they go through (especially the departments).

How does that work?  I've never heard of revising a contract.

I agree. Managers are like I don't understand why we can't keep people....ummm, because it is hard work if you're in a department. They expect them to come in being able to throw as much product as an experienced stocker, and it just don't happen at minimum wage. I don't have a tolerance for the lazy I'm entitled attitude, but I make way more than minimum wage.  Some people barely make over that after years of service. People are going elsewhere for a higher wage and aren't killing themselves.
