I've worked at Kroger for 2 years now, and am in college for mechanical engineering, and am a junior in college. I've been applying for internships recently, because they will be good for my career, and have gone on some interviews for them.
I got a call back from a local firm that I interviewed at, and they want to hire me! But here's the thing... they want me to start Monday. I make $7.50/hr at Kroger, and the internship will be paying me $9/hr. It will probably only be an internship for 1 year, they said a max of 2, but with career opportunities once I graduate.
So the problem is, I need to take this job. But since they want me to start Monday. I planned on giving Kroger a 2 week notice before I quit, but in this case, it looks like I will be giving a...3 day notice. I'm already scheduled for a 8 hour shift on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I'm in a small department that is already understaffed. I will feel bad for my coworkers.
What should I do? I know management will be super pissed at me about leaving without notice...
Think of it this way: if they were going to fire you, would they give YOU two week's notice? And as for hurting co workers..........who's career are you working towards?
Giving 2 weeks notice is less about actually helping Kroger and more about making you look professional. Any respectable company would allow you to give two weeks notice, or they should not expect that favor when something better comes along for you.
