okay, so i've been with kroger for about 4 months (close to five, but whatever)....i've always been on time and i even have went over and beyond to come in for a girl who i knew wasn't going to show, because she planned on quitting that day... Recently, I wanted sunday off, didnt get it ( As usual). Asked the fuel lead to change my schedule so i could go to church, so room could be made for JESUS people, JESUS! She denied my request, asked me to go talk to management, i talk to management and they instead move my hours later, so i could still come in. I had all intentions of coming into work, untill i got an unexpected call and hour and a half before i had to come in....it was a super personal family issue that I HAD to tend to. (Insert a matter of life and death situatuion that relates to you)... that how serious the matter was...after i received the phone call.. i immediately called management told them that i will be unable to make it, the manager on call was condescending and a little irritated that i couldn't come in...Or the simple fact that it was soooo personal to me that i couldn't tell them what was actually going on, only that i had to take care of a "personal issue."..........the next day i was summon to the management "chambers", i was joined by an union rep and some lady whom i've never seem work in the store...like ever...she didnt even have a kroger uniform on.....but anyways for 30 minutes i was scolded by the manager on call for "Calling out" the day before in front of these two women...badgering me with questions on where abouts, he got upset when i told him that i had to tend to a personal issue... Am i obligated to share MY complicated personal issues with all of krogers?....there was literally every manage plus extra workers outside the door..... When is it okay to call-out? whats the point of having a calling out option, if i'm going to get yelled at AND WRITTEN UP, even was told i wasn't valuable to the company by the manager... who do i talk to?
You can call out for any reason you deem "enough" for you being unable to go to work. They do not own you. Your personal issues are your own right and, no, you do not have to tell them.
It's none of their business.
You don't have a habit of calling off so it's nothing more than an annoyance and a waste of you, your manager, union rep, and whoever the other person's time to write you up. In any case, I do hope that you refused to sign it.
In the future if you're not going to be able to come into work do the following: "Hello, this is [Insert Name]. I'm not going to be able to come to work today. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but it's beyond my control. Do you understand?" When they say "Yeah." then simply say "Thank you for your understanding. Goodbye." and hang up. If they ask you "Why?" or anything to that respect repeat the "do you understand"-question or tell them something along the lines of "It's something I wouldn't feel comfortable talking to you about." or "It's personal". They don't need to know your excuse; they don't need your story. You informed them as soon as you could and that's all you're required to do. As soon as they say that they understand the situation you're able to end the conversation.
If you have to go to the hospital ask the doctor for a note saying you were there and if asked for proof make a copy of the note and make sure it goes with the write up, if they insist on doing that. Do not give them the original - always make a copy! If it's something like a family emergency always try to have proof that you are where you say you are or someone that will back you up.
If this is, indeed, your first offense then your manager is a prick. At most he should have understood and explained for you not to make a habit of it. I'm sorry that you got the third degree from him but things happen. Take it as a warning and keep in mind that it takes three write ups in a short period of time(time and amount can be contract specific - ask for a copy!) for the same thing to actually do anything to you.

It's a verbal warning if it's the first time. They really did have a right to do it, but how they did it was wrong. Shouldn't take 30 minutes and the whole crew to do it. In our division we have to call in two hours before our scheduled shift or they treat it the same as a no call no show. You did the best you could, and you did call. I wouldn't worry about it, move on.
You are NOT obligated to tell them YOUR personal family business for ANY reason whatsoever. EVEN if they ask, it's NOT their business unless YOU make it their business. Refuse the write up. What happened was beyond your control. If possible, get a doctor's note if hospitalization was required. That may help in the long run
