All the department heads and leads at my store now have to wear headsets with an earpiece all the time so they can talk back and forth with a manager without tying up the regular phone. Here's the problem. Besides looking dumb and ridiculous, it does nothing to alleviate the number of times that other people have to use the phone to talk to someone else in the store. Also, you have to leave it on and you can hear other people's conversations unless you or they switch to a different channel. It's very distracting trying to talk to a customer while someone else is talking in your ear. It's also very unsanitary when more than one person has to use the same earpiece. Who wants to stick something in their ear with someone else's earwax all over it?
It only a matter of time before a majority of them get damaged/misplaced/go "missing" and management gets tired of spending money to replace them.

That's actually a cool idea! I wish all of us had portable phones. It'd make communication a bit easier.
Aren't they called "cellphones"?
At our store, the managers have phones that could be considered "portable phones". The phones they use ARE NOT cell phones.
I think pretty much all Kroger stores have those, don't they? Those wireless phones are a part of the phone system Kroger uses in its stores and has extensions like 2161, 2162... etc... only management uses them, from what I've seen. They tend to get broken a lot, lol. Can't blame that one on us employees, 'cause we don't touch them. :p
My only issue with the management's phones, is when they're having a discussion with you and then take part on the phone conversation without skipping a beat. It's made for some very interesting/confusing conversations.
That is the stupidest idea ever. I do not need the other department heads, co, and managers in my ear on a Saturday while im already understaffed and having to go get things from the back for customers cause e schedule is moronic. If they really need to tell me something they can call me over the intercom. It takes 1 min to find a phone and call someone back. If they need to talk to you all day you are not doing your job correctly or the co managers wanna micro manage you. A customer does not want to talk to a distracted employee who looks like they are talking to themselves. Yet again another waste of money and time. If you want to make kroger better, give more hours to depts and give raises for hard work, not to some lazy ass who has been doing the bare minimum for 10 and refuses to move up. The Kroger Life.
