Our front end supervisors put those who they meh be upset with or don't like on the first register after express. Always the busiest. You never get a break.
Personal preference, we've got cashiers who love express (small orders, tend to be slower), and some who hate it. I personally like non-express lanes except the one you mentioned, the one right besides the express ones. You get a steady flow of customers, and usually there's at least some bagging help.

At our store they put you at the register right by the front doors. Hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter.
I dislike express when I have a full shift. BUT if it's gonna be a busy day like wednesday or sunday I dont mind it cause most of the time we don't have enough baggers anyways so might as well be on xpress.
The best register is when youre sandwiched in between two active other registers.
When I was a cashier, I HATED being on express. I always had customers come through with more than 15 items. There was one time where I had a $500 come through while I was on express. I also hated being on the register right in front of the door. Other than those two, I wasn't picky.
Which register I prefer to be on, depends on my mood and who the baggers are that day. We have some very SLOW ASS baggers who can't keep up, or in my case, just completely walked away after I started ringing up an order one day. (That was fun NOT and pissed off the customer.) I don't mind express, so long as people heed to the 15 limit. I also like to be on the busier registers, as it makes my night go alot faster.
