I called in sick due to having to have blood work done. I've been very sick lately, vomiting, etc. my doctor believe it's my gallbladder. Well, when I called in sick and told my store manager I had to have some test ran - he asked what time was my shift (12:30-9) and asked what time my test was (1:30). He asked me to come in at 2:30 instead of calling off. I had a doctors excuse writing me off for that day and not to return until the next day. He told me if I didn't show up it would be unexcused. I just finished my 45 days and I have a doctors excuse. Can I get terminated for this?

thanks.

Generally speaking, if you called in early enough and have a doctors note excusing you for the day, they can't really do much, especially if it's a first offense. They can ask you to come in later, but if you've got a doctors note saying not to come in, that should cover your ass.

If a doctor excuses you for the day then that in itself SHOULD override ANY request on reporting to work, EVEN if it's hours later. Check with the union (if you joined) your manager will be fine. He can manage without you.

Check your union contract.  We don't have to bring a doctor's note until we have missed three consecutive days.

Thanks. They ended up firing me anyways. Manager said I lied. Said doctors excuse wasn't good enough. Screw Kroger's!

That's part of how Kroger works. They chase off the decent employees and end up with the lazy or poor ones.
They make up stupid excuses and bull**** to get you out the door.

Sorry... you must have a really terrible management team at your store. Kroger should be working to retain people, not shove them out of the door, considering how the company has such a high turnover and its stores are suffering as a result.

Oh well... look at it this way... you can put applications it at other retailers and be paid several dollars more since Kroger is the worst paying retail company out there. Walmart, Target... both companies will start you out at $9.00 an hour if not more, and if you live in an area that has Albertsons/Tom Thumb/Publix/WinCo/Winn-Dixie/pretty much any other grocery chain, you'll still make more than the cheapskates at Kroger are willing to pay you.

Pretty much everyone out there pays better than Kroger, so you have that to look forward to!

Kroger's turnover rate is one of the worst in the country.
The Atlanta market recently went on a hiring binge trying to fill 2,000 + positions in all their stores.
The store I left had 40 positions open as of a few weeks ago.

And yet, even with the numbers being out there, no one questions WHY these numbers are so high.
All the public cares about is being able to save $1 off of their spaghetti-o's.

If you're out of probation, the union might want to know just what you were fired for, just saying.

All because of one call off? That sounds really excessive. A doctor's note -is- good enough and your manager shouldn't be so stuck up and just accept it. He must have really hated you.

It's not like you went out partying or something after you got finished with the blood work =\

If you were past your probation period, they can't fire you for something like that, especially if it was a one time only thing.  You need to get the union involved.  Even if you don't want your job back, if you win, Kroger will have to pay you backpay for all the time you were off.

Contact the union first, then file for unemployment.

I would get Kroger's fax number and call my doctor and ask that they FAX a copy of your excused day off to the management at Kroger.  I would also mention in my grievance with the union that the store manager gave you ONE HOUR to get your blood test done.  ONE HOUR!  Waiting time, time to do the blood work, then drive time to your job.  In ONE HOUR?  If your doctor gave you a note to miss one day of work then there is a reason for it.  Doctor's don't just give days off freely.

What did this manager say you lied about?
