Say you have a doctor's excuse for the next day and you give it to your manager ahead of time. Do you still have to call off?

It's better if you call them and advise them of the situation. If not they will mark you as No Call, No Show.

I didn't have to since I brought it in and had the manager leave a note on their desk for the morning person. I also made a copy of the note just in case, for my own records if something came up, and brought it with me for the next few days.

Gotta cover your own butt and expect the worst.
