Kroger no longer cares about their employees
Permalink

I really need to vent!  I have been with this company close to 30 years and have seen a lot of changes.  At one point of time, the employees were like family and the upper management really cared.  These past few months my opinion of this company has changed.  First an employee came to work in severe pain and when it got unbearable, the Co wouldn't let her leave until she got someone in to cover her shift (which is something I could've done but that wasn't good enough) I was told I couldn't be floor supervisor and run the Service Desk, even though I do it all the time!  She ended up having surgery and was told if she had waited much longer her appendix would have burst.   Then my husband had a heart attack and the next day, since they were going to run tests and decide what to do and my husband said "go to work, I'll call you.  You'll just be sitting here waiting" I went to work.  When he did call and told me it was a heart attack and they were transferring him (we live in a small town).  I asked to leave only to get a run around.  After his triple bypass, I went and asked for a 2 week leave of absent.  I was asked why.  Seriously?  The manger said my husband having a heart attack and a by-pass didn't qualify.  When I told him I had already talk to someone in HR and was told to get the papers from him, he changed his tune.  What is wrong with these people?  Do they not have any empathy for their employees?

I'm sorry to hear that about your husband. Your management are awful human beings if what you said is true.

Sure, it's not you having surgery but someone you love and asking for a few days off is TOO much for something like that, but if HR says it's okay then sure I'll stop being a total dick and let you be with them!

Your co-worker, however, should have called in and just went to the hospital. Trying to come to work and leave is, in my experience, such a hassle. I applause their work ethic, but if they are in that much pain before the shift it's not worth trying to come in and suffer through... if the pain started during the shift I'd feel different. Things happen that can't be helped, and asking to find your own replacement isn't the employees responsibility. Management knows this and just wanted to be dicks about it.

Some managers are like that.  I was throwing up at work one morning and asked twice to go home.  It was bad.  I mean projectile vomiting right at the cash register and they made me stay there and ring up customers.    Finally a customer complained to the manager and she finally let me go home!  Of course this wasn't as bad as what you experienced but management with all their employees not getting any hours should just call someone in.  Somebody's going to want to come to work.

Thank you, he is getting better.  He's not suppose to drive for 6 weeks and starts rehab next week.  He also has several doctor appointments coming up.  I decided to go back to work next week, but they will have to work around his rehab and dr appointments.  The day I do schedules will be easy because I can work anytime and it looks like I will have to work Sat and Sunday. I am not going to put up with anymore crap!  I treat everyone with compassion and understanding and I am now demanding the same for me!

Yeah, I was cashiering and at the time I was pregnant. Then halfway into my shift, I started cramping, got cold sweat and I could feel I was bleeding. I cried and begged to leave work so I could go to the hospital, but they were set on not letting me go home until someone could cover my shift. Turned out I had a miscarriage at work. I have hated Krogers since then.

You should have sued.

Still should, if permissible.

Sorry to hear what happened. I would have signed off and went to the hospital irregardless of tier wishes. I would sue them if you still can. and if they ask any favors of you, refuse each and everytime. That was heartless how they did. Hell, one time I got screwed over pretty bad. Wasn't as bad as yours, but to get back at them I watched a guy take about $300 worth of steaks and $150 worth of liquor and walk right out the door. Didn't say one word to management

Wouldn't have done any good to say something anyway.

Yea your right. If just one wrong thing is said to te shoplifter, management ends up apologizing, and giving the guy a giftcard so it seems.

I've had managers that actually care, and I've had some that could care less. They'd write you up EVEN with a doctors note, kroger needs to know if you care about your employees, or at the very least pretend to care and show common decency, employees will be more inclined to be more positive.

I can't believe some of these stories. Vomiting at the register and you weren't sent home? Husband had a heart attack and you're not allowed to take a week or two off to take care of him?? Uh, what do we have a union for???

Some managers are *******s, but that is just being plain stupid. Why would you want your cashier barfing at the register? That violates health code.....

When I was vomiting, I later found out I was having a severe reaction to some medication I was taking.  But, I was forced to stay on the register and work.  I didn't even get to go to the bathroom to throw up.  No, I had to do it in front of customers, in a cardboard box.  Kind of embarrassing.  The only reason they finally let me go home is because a customer went to management and complained!

If you don't know how to make a goddamned sign what makes you think you should be making calls on switching out end caps? I hope you aren't a grocery manager....

We have a union that is supposed to watch our backs.
Sadly, in many stores, it does not.

And if you do not believe some of these stories, are you sure you work at Kroger?
This is the kind of sh!t they do on a daily basis.
