So, can you get in trouble for leaving early without telling someone (night shifts). Occasionally it will be a really slow night and i'm scheduled til 11 pm, and I leave at 10 pm. Is this ok if I get everything I need to done and the dept looks good? I've done this probably maybe only like 5-7 times over the past year so its not like i'm doing it every day. They have no talked to me about it so I assume they just don't check and/or don't care.

What department?  If it's a service department such as deli, you have to stay until at least the official closing time for the department.  Otherwise, if you have ALL your work done, then maybe your department head will say it's okay on those occasions for your to leave early.  But don't do it without asking them about it first.

always ask management before you leave. Not doing so is considered job abandonment and can get you fired.

Literally this same exact post was  posted like two weeks ago. I'll assume you're the same person. If you aren't, idk why people keep thinking it's okay to leave early.

http://www.krogerforum.activeboard.com/t61185580/can-i-get-fired-for-leaving-work-early/

So I'll copy paste my response.

I've been working as a bagger for a month and a half now and I know what you mean by the late hour stuff.

But stop leaving. They still need you. Bagging and carts isn't the only thing you do. I know they suck at showing you how to do anything, but there are stuff you can do. Take wine caps to the back, sweep, trash cans, clean the register belts, etc. Just ask the manager around or some other worker and they will tell you how. Sometimes customers will show up randomly and a bagger will be needed.

You will easily get fired if you keep leaving early. Heck you might even get fired for doing it now if you've already done it a crap ton of times. Hopefully not though. :)

I know my copy paste above was meant for courtesy clerks, but even if you're in a different department which I'm now assuming you are, you still shouldn't leave early. They prob will need you for something. Up to you though. You can keep leaving early if you want but it's a risk not worth taking.

Ask the produce manager what you should do if you get all your work done early.  He/She may have suggestions as to what you can do to fill your time.  Or they might say you can leave early.  The important thing is to ask first.

One time we called the manager to ask if we could leave early since we had everything done in the deli. The manager came over and found busy work for us to do... but after he left we just sat down in the back and did nothing.

When I worked at Kroger behind the service desk, there were many nights where I would have all of my work done by 10:30 when the night cashier would come in, so I clocked out and left. Mind youI did this more times than I can count, and nobody said anything to me about it. Having said that, though, I think it all depends on who your bosses/management are. If they're the good kind, they wouldn't bat an eye.

Sometimes I leave thirty minutes early rather than taking my lunch and sitting there for 30 minutes.

I did this a lot at my old store, but so did tons of people - the morning customer service person took their 2 15s together and left at 3 instead of 3:30. Some nights I'd leave at 10:30 instead of 11 but always after finishing everything and none of us ever got in trouble for it.

At this store, not so much. I did tags a few times this summer and we finished so damn early, I'd do misplaced for like an hour then leave at 8 so I could go home and pass out by 8:30. I am not cut out for overnights anymore lol

I never worked an 8 hour in produce, but I did leave early during drug/gm shifts - they get 8 hours of work out of me, and none of us at the old store really saw a point in taking a lunch from :29 to :59 instead of leaving.

Note: this never applied to cashiers or courtesy clerks!

Well, if everybody else jumped off a bridge, would you jump off a bridge too?

Well, why not jump if you weren't going to get in trouble for it and everyone else was doing it lol!

Yes, you can get in trouble and potentially get fired.

If nothing happens when you are gone, you will probably be fine.  If something goes out of stock or if someone comes looking for you/someone from your department, you can get in trouble.

If it was to escape from Kroger, then yes. I'd probably be the first one off in fact.

Need a hand to hold on the way down?

Kroger is the corporate version of the Tacoma-Narrows bridge.
Sooner or later, the whole thing is going to collapse into a heap of debris and rushing water.

This is an extremely gray area.  Like many have said, it is job abandonment, a fire able offense.  But most managers would like to save the hours.

if youre in good standing it is probably no big deal, but if they don't like you and are looking for a reason to fire you, it would be extremely easy To terminate you for job abandonment.

also never ever ever ever shut down a service dept before posted closing time.
