Ditch Kroger insurance..?

I finally got insurance for myself. But... unfortunately it's crazy expensive. I work part-time at Kroger, with no chance to get full time (according to upper management our store doesn't meet a certain 'quota' for it?) and make around $8/hr. And I get maybe 18 - 24 hours a week. (I used to get around 30 but since they've hired new people they've cut alot of people.) In order to use my insurance, I have to pay every year up to $2,500 before they'll even start paying out on insurance. They've already taken out $55 dollars every paycheck (weekly) since Nov, but it drops in Jan and thus I obviously can't use it now as I don't have that kind of money. They want to know if I'll be renewing... Should I? I've asked others who say it's not worth it. But they also have insurance through other means. I NEED insurance, I have to have certain medicine but there is no way I can afford that and more every year... is there any other options or am I stuck..?

You should not be paying $55 a week for part time insurance..... are you sure they're doing it right?

I only pay $8 a week for a single person insurance and my deductable is $750.

Wouldn't it be cheaper just to pay the fine?  And I'm not sure how much your medicine is but check out other resources in you area.  I just got my daughter on a program at the hospital where she pays $10 for doctors visits, $10 for prescriptions.  She had an MRI for $50 and surgery for $150.  This was a minor day surgery but heck it's cheap and the doctor's are excellent!

I think I put in just like... a few bucks here and there when they told me to set it up...

but yeah, not counting taxes they take roughly $55 each time.

Best part is, because I can't use the insurance... I'll be out ALL the money until the next cycle starts where I then can opt out.

That's what I figured... mind you, I had to pay a fine last year and I hear it goes up every time you have to pay it.

And wow that sounds awesome! I wish they had that here...

I'm in VA and because they didn't do that state healthcare thing like some states, it's alot harder to get decent insurance here...

I'm part time, working on average 20 hours/week and my insurance costs $20.50/week, which is a little more than $900 a year. If I qualified for family insurance (would have to work 27 hours/week) my contribution would be $32.00/week. Sadly, there's no way I can have 27 hours a week every week, we just hired 2 new people :(

Virginia!  My daughter was born there.  Emporia.   As far as insurance, are you near Richmond?  Try doing a search for county hospital programs in your area, not state programs.  I didn't know about the program until my daughter had to go to the ER three times.  I started researching online and new that the county hospital was where all the uninsured poor folks went so I got her on that program.  The hospital is top of the line though.  It's also charity funded and not a private for profit hospital.  Do some research in your area and see if you can find anything.
