In Cincinnati area, at Kroger at one point several years ago it got to the point where they would not cash employee paychecks, because they would use the cash on hand to cash checks for customers.   They would then say the didn't have enough money.  One time I was told, "We're not the bank.  Go to the bank or get direct deposit.  Check cashing is not my job".  Another time I went to a store with a bank in it(not my store), and was told by customer service to go to the bank.  The in-store bank informed me that they were only allowed to cash payroll checks for the employees of that store only!!  Since my own store would not cash my paychecks, and it got to be a hassle to find  a store that would, I finally gave in and got direct deposit.  The only reason I didn't take my check directly to my bank is because Kroger paychecks are from an out of town bank, and my bank would have held the check for 7 days before cashing it.

When I tried to talk to the front office managers because I am a Kroger employee and it's a Kroger paycheck, they would reply with "the customers come first.  You are an employee".
