What to do?

Ok, So I am 16 years old and work as a Front End Courtesy Clerk (which usually just involves me bagging and getting carts all day). So at my job interview, they offered me the job right on the spot, no drug test or nothing. I started the next day and eventually got the hang of things. However, I was very clear that I could only work weekends because I'm in all AP and Honors class at school. Once I was officially on the schedule, they had me marked for Wednesday from 4-8 (not to mention that this was during EXAM WEEK) Nevertheless, I sucked it up and worked the shift. Then I once again expressed that I could only work on Saturday & Sunday 10:00-7:00. So this week (christmas break for me) they have me booked EVERY DAY for an 8 hour shift each day (other than christmas) It's 33 1/2 hours in total that I will be working this week. There is simply no way that I can work these hours since its Christmas and I have tons of other plans. I know I probably could have requested time off, but I had CLEARLY told them I could only work weekends so I figured they had gotten the point. What do I do now? I'm really tempted to just quit altogether but it's only my 4th week and I don't want this to affect me later.

You are expected to work during Christmas week. It is the busiest time of the year, other than perhaps Thanksgiving.

Either quit or show up.

I don't see the problem.

You aren't in school right now, and don't give me crap about AP or Honors. I took all AP and Honors in high school also, you don't have THAT much to do over the break.

The problem is that I'm not even in this for the money, I'm only here for experience to get a job I actually like.

I only want to work 16 hours and while I don't actually have that much work to do, I'm still a teenager and want to hang out with my friends who I haven't seen since I've been working nonstop. I told them I couldn't work this much and they clearly didn't listen.

I would just quit. You can get another job easily and your store apparently isn't honoring your availability. (Even if you're not in school at the moment, if you said you're unavailable you're unavailable regardless of the reason.)

They are ignoring the availability that you provided them with during the hiring process. You were hired on by someone that clearly believed your availability wouldn't be an issue and made the call to go ahead and hire you despite your availability restrictions. This person either failed to convey your availability to your store, provided the wrong availability information or provided the correct information, but was disregarded by your store. You personally expressed what your availability was to the store. What seems to be clear is your store doesn't care what your availability is (despite what the hiring propaganda claims about "flexible hours") and will likely continue to disregard it in the future regardless of how many times you remind them, so it's going to be a continuing problem for you. If money truly isn't an issue here, I would suggest seeking out other job opportunities with companies that will respect your availability. It's not going to impact you later if you quit. I've worked with people that have been forced to resign after being caught stealing and these people end up getting better paying jobs elsewhere after they resign. The only way it might impact you is if you quit and later try to re-apply at another store, you could be instantly blocked if you are marked as not to be rehired in the computer. Even then... so what? No big loss there because Kroger is a pretty bad company to work for.

Enjoy your youth... once you're no longer a teenager, you give up a lot of your freedom to the responsibilities of adulthood. It's up to you if you feel it's only right to stick it out and work your upcoming Christmas week schedule before telling your store that this will be your last week or if you want to tell them now (and give them at least a little time) that you're quitting (and free up the week to be with your friends) so that they can start covering at least some of your shifts. To be frank... you're just a courtesy clerk. If you do quit and they can't cover all your shifts, it's not going to cause as glaring of a problem as if you were a cashier or a supervisor or worked the customer care desk or something. All you do is bag and get carts. Your store is going to run out of carts with or without you there. Cashiers and customers are going to have to bag orders whether you're there or not.

It used to bother me when a co-worker would quit on the spot and leave a gap that meant more work for everyone else. It doesn't anymore because I know how terrible Kroger is when it comes to treating its employees, so I understand why the person does it and just deal with the ripples that it causes.

The choice is yours, obviously... but if as you say, money isn't an issue, then you're in a position where you are free to put your happiness first, so go with what's going to make you happy, because although life seems eternal at sixteen, you'll eventually learn that life's too short to spend it doing stuff that you don't like, assuming you have a choice in the matter.

Ok, so I worked 4-8 today and I asked about my schedule and they completely avoided my question and just said that the guy who does the scheduling had already gone home. I really don't know what else to do but quit at this point.

I wouldn't necessarily mind working these crazy hours if the management at my Kroger wasn't so ****ty. They didn't give me any training at all and every time I've asked about something they've just completely disregarded my question. They didn't even teach me how to use the clock-machine, they just gave me a number and I had to figure out the rest. And on my second day they had me getting carts in the pouring rain for 2 HOURS.

So it's not just me being a wimp about not wanting to work during my break, It's because they complete disrespect me at my Kroger and do not value my time.

If you are trying to use this job to use as experience for a different job later on (and I assume you mean a non retail job), don't just quit.

Give a 2 weeks notice, or you will be marked as un-rehireable. And if your future company cares enough to call Kroger, Kroger WILL say they wouldn't rehire you, which looks AWFUL.

Welcome to the real world.

Are you related to frontendslave? Do you only have one shirt with a hole in it?

Merry Christmas to you to, anon!
I'm glad to see your obsession over me hasn't waned a bit over the past few months.
Don't expect me to send you a Christmas card, though.
I will, if you want, send you some addresses for mental hospitals.
I believe you would benefit from them. And, maybe if you are lucky, one of the patients will think he (or she) is Santa Claus.

Yes I am still in love with you or maybe it is just a man crush.

But seriously, where are you working these days?

OP's complaint was that he was scheduled 4 to 8 on a Wednesday during exam week.  When he was in school.  His availability is for weekends only.  He made plans and they have scheduled him again outside of his availability.  Please read posts before you attack.  It appears the honors classes you took did not address this.  Reading comprehension.  You should learn it.

 1. School/education is MORE important than bagging groceries, getting carts, cleaning customer and lazy employee messes.

plus you can NOT tell OP he doesn't have much to do on his break.

when I was a courtesy, they pestered me and pestered me to work outside if my availability. They gave up out of frustration. But this one checker blatantly told me "I'm not that busy." I told him basically it's NOT his decision. This resulted in an arguement between me and him that would be top story on Jerry springer. But that's another story. Point is put your unavailabity in the computer and write down your availability and unavailability in BOLD FACED easy to understand letters and hand it in

I'm not going to mention it because you would simply find a way to stalk me again.
After finding the dead squirrel in my mailbox with a bow tied around its neck, I'm not taking any chances!
