Let's talk overtime.

I'm sure most stores have people that get a lot of it, so my question is, what's the most overtime over a year that you've seen people get?   Our grocery backup gets a lot every year.  He averages around $10k extra income from it annually, 12k this year.  I thought I worked a lot and made about 9 extra.

I know someone that grossed $25,500 extra income, net $18,500 from OT this year.  Old contract here are guaranteed 376 hours of OT a year if they want it.

That's crazy.  That's what, like 20+ hours a week on average for an entire year?

Yup.  Crazy and 21 hrs avg a week.  Picked up shifts from a lot of call ins.  Volunteered at other stores after shifts.  Worked at busy number one store in state.  Worked long hours 7 days a week for 30 days in a row twice with holiday weeks in the middle. Not enough people to get work done and a lot of work to do.  Earned every penny.  Wasn't just milking the system for OT.

I know an old contract that worked atleast 416 hrs of OT last year.  Most do not work the Sunday when they go on vacation(5 weeks a year).

Man, what with all this stuff I keep reading about getting only 8--24 hrs/week I'd be freakin OUT RAGED if I was seeing peeps in my store pulling down O.T. like this!!!!.......But what ever.

There used to be an hourly dept. lead at my store who would pull down over 40 hrs of ot most weeks. He worked a very late 2nd shift, would find any and every single excuse he could get or invent to slow down or even out right reverse the simplest of his tasks; he would roll around in the back lots on a fork truck for hours on end, middle of the night.

There are those who legitimately earn their O.T., but many times it's just suckin a time clock. Seen it enough times.

If I get overtime, it's because I had to have it.  I hate overtime.  I want to work my 8 hours and go.

Hard to fathom those figures when Gerg Jardon, store manager, will chase down off-the-clock associates in the parking lot to reprimand them over 15 minutes of overtime.

Some stores/management are like that.   That's a huge reason why I'm still working at the store I am now, being able to earn a decent living with limited stress is important.

I am a cutter in Michigan and we can't find people who can handle working meat department. We had three full time people retire in six months and we can't seem to find adequate replacement. I had 30 hours of OT last week. I have a daughter who was on vacation from school and believe me the last place I wanted to be was the grocery store but the starting wage does not equal the work that needs to be done so they can't find good help and anyone capable gets screwed.

I had a manager like this try to write me up for it. I counted out the exact change he acted like came out of his own pocket slammed it down on his desk and said here's your money now give me my time back. He never said a word about the occasional 15 minutes to me again. He ended up being my favorite store manager ever.

The reason store managers get away with it is because employees go along with it.  If a manager chased me down in the parking lot I would either just drive off or roll the window down and say "I'm clocked out so I'm leaving now, you can talk to me tomorrow when I clock in".
