Much more responsibility for not much more pay. If you are at a busy store where Kroger is used instead of a local bank, you will deal with large amounts of cash and you need to keep your till spot on.  You will be on the front line to get yelled at by customers complaining about everything, but hey, you get an override. Good luck.

Not really that all fun and games, even if you get an override key.

  • You get swamped with lottery people who are like "make it a winning ticket, har har im so funny and original"
  • Western Union transactions that hold up the line
  • A phone that almost never stops ringing, half the time it's for pointless crap like "I bought this product and it was bad, can I return it at your store?"
  • Customers who yell at you and blame you for anything that is wrong with Kroger or the store in general
  • People who want papers faxed (God forbid, this takes forever)
  • Other employees on the front end calling you for help with something, completely disregarding the long line you have
  • Customers who insist that you call and have someone check "in the back" or call another store for a particular product that is not on the shelf
  • Customers who throw a fit when you say you can't cash their $2,000 check because of lack of money in your till (You get paid that big? You should be getting your own bank account.)
  • *******, entitled, and/or stupid customers in general

All this for only an extra 40 cents per hour. But if you want pointers, always follow federal laws and regulations. Do not answer the ringing phone until you are done with the customer you are currently serving. Do not do price adjustments or rain checks for alcohol and tobacco regardless of the reason, it is illegal. Do not refund alcohol or tobacco without a receipt. If someone's payroll check gets denied, give them the slip for Certegy if it's a Certegy error, give them the slip to KCRC if it's any other error. Do not attempt to explain what the error is. Be prepared to call someone for help numerous times because there are so many things that come up which you cannot handle on your own.

Most importantly, do not, I repeat DO NOT, do any type of financial transaction over the phone. Western Union NEVER calls your store to do security updates, test transactions or any other form of transaction. Furthermore, Kroger corporate will never call you to perform any transactions over the phone. Hang up on these callers.

Good luck. You will need it.

Thanks. I'll have plenty of help. My store doesn't do faxing or copying. I know the western union takes forever. I'm hoping I won't be in the office all the time, just whe someone needs a break or we get slammed. I mainly only want an over ride and key to the office

Extra what cents an hour? In our division (Mid-Atlantic), we get no raise for the office at all.

On the other hand, in my store, working the office has got to be one of the easiest jobs there. It's one of the few positions with little in the way of manual labor, most of the customers are friendly and honest, and you only have to deal with one customer at a time unlike self-checkout. On slow days, I spend at least half the time tidying the place up, helping bag, etc.

Be sure to read up on all the rules and regulations for everything you're doing, and if you can have those policies in writing for things like Western Union, checks, IDs, and refunds. That way when a customer complains about you rejecting their expired ID, you can point to the piece of paper and say "Sorry bub, store policy."

Keep an eye on your tills so you know approximately how much money you have, so you know ahead of time if you can cash that large check/WU payout.

Watch your override, never let it be used for overriding a check unless you personally are there and give the all clear. And don't lose it!

Familiarize yourself with the latest scams (these'll usually be communicated to the FE lead by e-mail, but sometimes a local Kroger will call and alert you), as the 3rd poster said, never conduct ANY sort of transaction or prepaid card business over the phone. Just hang up.

Learn how to close the office. Write it down, practice makes perfect.

Going 4011, I want to work at your store!  I know all stores are different, mine also pays 40 cents more an hour.  I have been told that our customer service is the busiest in our district so I shouldn't assume all stores get the volume we do.  Also, not all customers service workers at my store are allowed even in the cash office to close at night.  Weird how the same company can have so many different rules at different stores.

We always have at least 2 people working the desk and the line stays a line daily.  During the holidays we need 3 up there. It isn't that we are slow workers, we were all picked based on our cashier performance, it is that we really do have THAT many people coming in for our services.  We offer Western Union money transfers, money orders, online bill pay, fax and check cashing in addition to huge lottery sales. Oh, and can't fail to mention the phone constantly ringing.  With the Powerball jackpot being so high, it is nothing to see customers drop $50-100 on tickets with a few people cashing out their cash benefits from their ebt cards to purchase them.  Getting uscan changers and pickups done is a big challenge on busy days because you have to wait for a small break in the line to do things here and there.  If the line ever goes down you are immediately called out to a register.

On the positive though, the day flies by because there is rarely any down time.  Here, it is a huge responsibility not to be taken lightly because of the large amounts of cash and the federal anti money laundry laws.  I was just kinda off put by the poster wanting to do it for an override.  We can get fired on the spot for using it improperly.  It isn't that I love Kroger lol it is more that I hate the thought of me or anyone else getting fired for making a mistake from anywhere and the reality is that at least at my store, making an unintentional mistake causing money loss will get you fired in a heartbeat.

I do appreciate this forum though for helping me see the differences in the way things are run around the country.  Many things similar but many things different as well.

Friendly and honest customers?

"My dad/mom bought me this makeup/baby item/something small and around 10 bucks and i already have one/don't need it/whatever and no he doesn't have a kroger card, can i swap it or get store credit?"

one person tried that with something that was the generic walgreens brand, like dude, come on.

and they're friendly until you can't cash their check because their ID is expired or the date is tomorrow or certegy just rejects it flatout. and they're friendly until you reject their western union pick up because your legal name is not jimmy, it is james, surely the person sending you money knows your real name?

and then the couponers and the people bickering about mega event prices. and price checks, oh for the love of god, will grocery ever answer the phone

i do like the counter between us though, get the eff out of my personal space. and just remember when they're being nasty, that their life is so horrible they feel the need to be so rude to another human being that is getting paid just above minimum wage to deal with them. and your life is not that pathetic

LOL!  That is my reality as well.  Don't forget the person complaining in line about the wait and they get up to you and don't have their paper filled out.  "I am already in the system."  me- doesn't matter, the paper needs filled out.  Certegy rejection, "but I need that money" me- not my problem, go to a bank.  "moneygram is cheaper" (like I am pulling prices out of my butt)  me in my mind- then please get the f*** out of my line and go to Walmart.

Only 2 more months......only 2 more months.....

at this store we don't make people fill out the form to send money or pay a bill and it drives me mad along with that fact that we'll take expired ID for checks and paper ids until they expire

at my old store, everyone had to fill one out and they never paid out when the name didn't match but a few weeks ago a lady's husband sent her $300 to the english version of her name, not the hungarian one and the manager allowed it! they're not the same damn name oh my god
