Fired for learning my job!

I got hired in at Kroger for the Deli.I did 4 shifts and 3 of those shifts I spent 3 hours on the computer before even going to the Deli.So by the time I got back there most of the stuff was done and it was a lot of clean up work and making fried chicken when needed.I can tell what I did each of those shifts. One night I left a dish to soak for 2 people because i would of been way over my time to leave if I waited to do it. One of the workers was also new like me and then one was training us.The trainer got mad because as he has expressed all day he does not get paid to do what he does. When in fact he does get paid to do it. When I came in the next day I got in trouble for being on my phone when I usually just check it for time and have seen the manager on her phone. Then my next work shift I got fired because I wasn't doing my job. When I was still learning how to do things and did everything that was asked of me. I pulled Donuts off the shelf all shifts, and marked them down.I got donuts out of the freezer 2 shifts one shift they sent another newbie and the other it was done when I got there. I have fried chicken. Baked cookies and boxed them. Helped people at the counter. But I spent most of my time doing dishes because as the mid shift but not getting there until around 4 that was what was left to be done. And I got in trouble for it. They said there was more to the job then that. And when I said well how would I know how to do these things if I never did them and they made an excuse that knowing didn't prove anything. Then to make them look better said I changed my availability. When my first day I asked to be put on night shifts because thats when i have rides. They all agreed and said that was fine. Then after finding out when the Deli opened I changed my shifts to the morning and night. In my opinion thats better than just night shifts. I don't understand how I could be fired for this and it all seems really unfair. Then the store manager lied to me and said he would reevaluate everything and was just going to send me home for the day, but never did so and was rude on the phone when I called to follow up with it.  When I did my interview the lady said she has a hard time putting people back there because the workers don't accept new people they have their own little clique. Then  the manager told me I just couldn't work in the Deli but in the future could come back for another area but the whole reason on firing me was because I was a bad worker.  What can I do?

There is nothing you can realistically do since you were on your probationary period. It's **** how you were treated for sure but you're probably better off looking for another job and just filing for unemployment.

I don't think she can file for unemployment because she was on probation and didn't work for Kroger long enough.  Plus Kroger offered her another position in another department.  They don't just give out unemployment to anyone who asks for it.

You could always accept another position with Kroger and work while you are looking for another job.  As soon as you find another job, tell that dang manager HE isn't working out to your expectations and walk out lol!

You know, you can't fire me I quit!

I work in the deli at my store, and yes it seems the deli at many stores do have cliques. For myself, the key to being successful back there was being a self starter, and brave at accepting new tasks and approaching customers. I hadn't worked with people face to face for 20 years, even though I was nervous about it all, I faked it to make it. Just because a manager was on their phone, doesn't make it ok for you to be on yours. Life is just unfair and people are hypocritical. I didn't use my phone in front of anyone for the first six months, I hunted the store to help customers to avoid using my phone for the aisle numbers on the Kroger app. What I did do is wear a $5 watch or set my phone timer to vibrate. At the end of the day, I hope this can be lessons learned and you will have more successes in the future.

We can acknowledge those things and still seek justice, can't we?

I guess if that's the hill OP wants to die on today, he's free to move forward. IMHO, I'm inclined to accept reality as I tend to have better luck with finding a way through then.

Never said I was on my phone for any other reason to check the time. Which was needed when cooking the chicken and the clock was all the way in the back of the Deli on a phone. Never said I sat around waiting to be told what to do either. I didn't have money to go buy a watch I barely had money to buy lunch for the day, which is why I needed the job in the first place.

Why did you need a clock for cooking the chicken? Our fryers had timers on it, and we just set the timers and just got em when they were done.

Although, I don't see why having your phone for just the time is a problem. I had my phone on my person for this reason (and to set the timer for temp logs because I was notorious for forgetting to do them every two hours). You can lose a watch in the fryer, lol

There's another guy on another thread talking about getting screwed on a work place injury. The responses have been almost universal in what he should have done, opposed to what he did do.

It's the same thing here.

Some times, some of us have to learn things our own way in our time. Nothing and nobody is gonna make a dent on us til then.

Here's the thing about the phone.  You aren't supposed to use them while on the floor working.  Our policy allows us to use the phone in an emergency, away from customers.   I've seen floor supervisors, managers, other clerks using their phones ALL THE TIME.  You know where mine was?  In my pocket, waiting for me to use it on a break or lunch. Well of course I could have looked at all the other employees behavior and thought "they're doing it, so I will too!"  But I didn't.  As far as managers go, with the hours they work I understood why they might need to use their phone.   I was actually on my phone at the floral desk one morning and the store manager walked up to me.  I just whispered "emergency, MIL taken to hospital" and he walked away and came back later to talk to me.  Maybe I didn't get in trouble because THEY NEVER SAW ME ON MY PHONE when working.

It doesn't matter why you were looking at the phone. What this is about is that there was an opportunity for someone to misconstrue your actions. While we cannot control other people's perception 100% of the time, we can recognize that we are being scrutinized and take steps to not give anyone any ammunition. I'm 100% positive there are people who don't like me, I do everything in my power to not give them anything to twist or distort. More often than not, they don't have anything to run their mouths about!
