They made me bring a doctors note once.  Made me mad, I only missed one day.  In our area/contract you have to bring a doctors note if you miss three consecutive days.  Not one day.  I had a doctor appointment anyway so I go a note.  But, I didn't turn it in the next day I went to work.  I talked to the union rep at the store and I thought she would take my side.  No.  She said get a note.  Just another example of how Kroger doesn't play by the rules.

Are you past your probationary period? If not, then Kroger can pretty much terminate you for anything, regardless of whether you're in the union or not. Speaking of the union, are you in it? If so, you should have a copy of the union handbook, and in it, you should be able to find out whether or not Kroger demand a doctor's note for calling in one day. If you don't have a copy of the handbook, get with your union steward as soon as possible and see what he/she says.

Unfortunately, your story is all too common: Kroger not caring about its employees and not being compassionate enough to understand that yes, people do sometimes get sick enough where they need to call in for a day. This is why most Kroger employees care as little about Kroger and its customers as Kroger does about them, and it shows in the OSAT surveys and high turnover rate/constant "Now Hiring!" signs in stores.

Take care of your health first and foremost.

You may get yelled at, sure, but if you're past your probation then it will take more than just an unexcused absence to fire you.

First of all feel better! ....this is what  Kroger mngmt team does!!.....In my years of being there I've had to deal with that and breaking down your schedule to keep you part time, working your whole dpt with no help, but the  picks get the full time position and hours and no resposibilty of the work!.....just to share what I've been through tell me why it took five yaers to become full time and when I did....they closed our store and now I work 45 min from home....before my store closed I busted my hump to become a certified reciver and now I'm just cleaning up behind overnight crew and throwing freight in the day ...nevermind that to get me all the way out there to work I was told that I could be a recivier  but what they didn't tell me that it was just for grand opening week ...that's it.....so....that's Kroger for ya!!!

I worked at Kroger for almost 5.5 years...I was a Drug/GM department head for 3 of those years. Kroger has some idiotic policies...and the Union stewards/reps I had to talk with were absolute jokes. The Kroger I worked at....it seemed like everyone had their own special attendance/tardy policy. Some people were consistently late (not just a few minutes...some would come in 1-2 HOURS late) and nothing was done. Others would come in 5 minutes late and get written up.

I think the "official" Kroger policy is there is no such thing as an "excused" absence. Even with a doctors note. If you are past your probationary period, don't sweat it. I know our disciplinary action process was: verbal warning, documented verbal warning, written warning, 1 day suspension, 3 day suspension, 5 day suspension, indefinite suspension, then....termination.

As for the doctor's note...don't worry about that. I jacked up my shoulder and had my arm in a sling and was under work restrictions per doctors orders. My Co-Manager ordered me to violate those doctors orders and use my injured shoulder. When I told her I couldn't due to doctor's orders, she threatened to fire me for insubordination. Seriously.

Dang, too bad she didn't fire you.  Can you imagine the settlement money they would have had to pay you?  You and your attorney could have cashed in big time!!
