Rumor has it a long-term cashier from another store got fired because she checked an ABC agent's ID (who was over 21), but keyed in the wrong birth year by mistake, and that the store got fined $10 grand. How plausible is this? Could the cashier have gone to the union over it, or do ABC laws/policies supersede any of that? I've never heard of anything like it in my store, worst is someone getting fired for selling an underage customer wine. But if everyone involved is over age, that sounds ridiculous.
I'd like to see that stick. $10,000 for making a mistake? If he was underage, no problem. But he did verify the legal age on the id so that's all that's really required by law. What about gas stations that don't have that kind of system that Kroger does? All they do is look at the id, verify the age, then sell the liquor. You have to make the rules the same for all businesses. Plus, how does he prove the cashier put in the wrong age? The date of birth doesn't print on the receipt. How can they prove the cashier put in the wrong age? This is just stupid.

You can actually look up the age entered. When accounting clerks look up a transaction on ACE the receipts that show include the full entered birthdate. All that would have to happen was for the agent to request a copy of the receipt to be printed off and he could check.
That said I really doubt this happened, as the undercover agent has no way to verify that the typed in birthdate was wrong. From his end it would look like the cashier looked at the id and put in a birthday. The more likely reason for the termination, if this happened at all, would be if the agent was not actually 21 and the cashier put in the wrong birthday to make it appear that he was old enough.
