Our store has issues with turnover and vacations whenever managers chase a kid off they just schedule the other part timers from any department in the store they can. Along with the fact our store has a lot of 20-30+ year vets so lots and lots of vacations. So now my question is even if the part timer asks the manager "hey i only want the hours my department gives me" they laugh at you and max out your schedule ignoring if your request. Along with the fact that we finally get 2 week schedules but they still change it every week so you can't plan it out at all. Is their anything us part timers can do or do we just have to accept them forcing these hours in other departments on us?

I take all the hours I can get working in any department and any store.  You are lucky.  I am full time so I get my 40 but my part timers are only being scheduled 12.  Soon, they will not have insurance because they are going to be lower than the 24 hour average for the quarter.  I try to offer them more hours but they keep blowing me off.  So, I don't want to hear their whining when they don't have insurance.

They can schedule you per "Needs of the business".

You need to make yourself unavailable if you don't want extra hours.  As a clerk, the manager can put you anywhere in the store that they need you.  Except, the Meat and Seafood department are a different contract at most stores and only people on their contract can work in those departments.

Just to let you know once you close your avail and start rejecting shifts, you will be the "kid chased off". On to the next person they can force cheap labor from...
