I traded shifts with a utility clerk. As far as I'm aware that means cleaning bathrooms and doing the trash. Anything else? Advice and tips are appreciated.
Well you can expect to push carts too. As well as unload trucks, they'll prolly keep you a few hours over your shift to do that. Oh and it's not unusual to be handed a tooth brush and water bucket an spatula-thingy and be told to get down on all 4s and clean under the beer coolers (that's pretty gross).
Ask the Utility clerk what they normally do. The CSM or store manager will probably have a list of things for you to do.
Ours cleans the produce green racks and dairy cooler racks and frozen and dairy glass and other misc cleaning. Usually, the courtesy clerks clean bathrooms here. Your store may do things differently.
If you finish everything and want to make some bonus points, offer to clean the outside dock bays. Should be full of dirt, dog food and pallet parts. You won't be unloading trucks unless you are over 18 and have been properly trained on the power equipment.
There was a job duty list for the utility clerk tucked away in some asinine place on front end, on one of those information boards they are so fond of putting up for the employees that nobody but the FEM/CSM ever look at. It had a minute to minute job duty setup for the whole shift. Was a great thing to answer "what are you doing?" with "consult the cleaning schedule."

Trade shift and do his assignments or just work his time?
If you are taking over his assignments for the day, then ask for a list of his responsibilities so you'll know what to do. Usually it's more detailed cleaning than a cc. (At least at my store it is.)
What our utilities do daily is:
1. Sweep outside enterance
2. Sweep entire store and mop as needed.
3. Clean bathrooms
4. Empty all trash (checkstands, department garbages)
5. Clean bottle room and sort as needed
6. Clean shelves (if needed)
