Manager went back on his word. What can I do?

i was hired on as a courtesy clerk about five months ago, was promoted to a combo about a month after being hired, and everything was fantastic. I loved my job. There had been a lot of turnover in he bakery, we are a relatively busy store so three people was not enough to have on staff. The department manager was about to leave for vacation, making it two, so the spot needed to be filled fast. The store manager made it seem very easy and pretty much begged me to go, so I said yes.

I was out there the following week with no training at all, no ACT modules, nothing! nobody showed me much of anything, I was thrown right into it. After a week they scheduled me for closing, and except for the first shift where I stayed until 8 and was given a basic rundown, I was completely on my own. Most days I would be left alone since 3 onward. After a week of this I told my manager that since I had never been officially promoted, I wanted to return to my old position, that I was not happy in the bakery. He said yes and said the next week I would no longer be in bakery.

i have been back there for two months. Still always closing on my own, i never received any training and have not been able to learn much because I am always alone. He keeps telling me I will leave, now he is saying we are waiting for the new hires to arrive, they just need to finish training, something I never got to receive.

i was officially promoted to GM a week ago, I will do backup bookkeeping and he said I would supplement with floral and cutting fruit. he gave me commercial bakery as an option but I made it clear I was not interested in that. We had planned on cutting fruit about a month and a half ago, and floral came into the mix after I spoke with both him and the floral manager about three weeks ago.

i spoke with him yesterday asking when I can finally leave bakery once and for all and move on to the new jobs he has been talking about for so long. And he said will supplement bookkeeping with commercial bakery. After we agreed I would not do that, I would cut fruit instead. But yesterday he said  he filled the position in Fruit cutting, I can only do it maybe one day maximum, and I heard from other employees that the position in floral is about to be filled by another girl who just got promoted. So commercial bakery it is.

I am on good terms with the store manager so I know he is not messing with me. This is not personal, I think he just keeps forgetting things due to being so busy, and he is scrambling for keeping the departments where they need to be. I get that, but I feel like I am being mowed over on and treated very poorly here. I want to tell him that I would like for him to keep his word, and let me supplement with cutting fruit and floral as planned, that he should squeeze me in on the schedule because I was told I would be going there before the other employees were.

what can I do??? How do I approach this? I have been very nice and soft spoken but it is not getting me anywhere. Anyone been in a similar situation?

It takes a LONG time to leave a department. The only way to get out if by putting your foot down and annoying the crap out of them to schedule you elsewhere.

If you don't mind being backup bookkeeper, then I would take the backup bookkeeper/commercial bakery position. For now.

Commercial bakery is not so bad. They will bring racks of bread from outside of the store and you will put it on shelves and do your markdowns. They may have you start as early as 3am, so that could be a downside. And they may have you help the night crew with conditioning the store or doing price changes.

While you getting experience in that, talk to produce and floral manager. Show them that you have passion for cut fruit and floral and when they have an opening, they will think of you. But only if you are reliable in comm. bakery and bookkeeping. Meaning, you will not be calling in sick or doing a no call, no show and not being late. Go above and beyond your duties. If you want to pick up some extra hours, tell the floral manager that you are available. Talk to your comanager about getting a cut fruit and floral training so you are ready when time comes.

Twice a year we do a "declaration". That's when you will have a chance to declare that you want to change departments, so when there is an opening, you can be transfered there unless there is someone already declaring that position who also has seniority over you.

Also remember, store managers get transfered maybe after 1.5-2 years, so next one maybe more opened to you switching departments.

And hate to say it, just because you are friendly with the store manager, it doesn't mean he cares about you one tiniest bit. Needs of the store come always first.

Good luck.

The last time this happened i waited until one night when we were both closing. I called him into the back produce cooler and turned off the lights. When he came in he was looking for me and he kept walking farther into the darkness. I took one of the produce cutting knives and held him down while i carved Olathe corn and shoved it up his azz. Then i pulled my pants down and did a freshness check all over his face. After that he never called my to cashier ever again.
