managers are salary so it doesnt matter for them. department managers are hourly so they are suppose to clock out, but most don't. it honestly doesnt matter.

Well define shopping - to me, if you work say for example, in the deli or right next to it, why should i clock out, go back to the deli, get my food, then go back to the breakroom? That's a good 5 minutes wasted. It's faster to just buy the food when i'm back there, then clock out. I don't think they care in my store as long as you don't abuse it and take half hour breaks.

Never shop(buy merchandise) while on the clock.  Just a bad idea.

Have someone else pay for it while they are off the clock or pay for it before your shift.

I read about someone that got fired for buying goodies for some kind of department manager meeting while on the clock.

I know for our contracts if we shop on the clock that can be an SIR, or a possible firing offense.

I've worked for Kroger for over 25 years and everybody always buys their lunch before they punch out.  Ir's not as if  the employees are doing their actual grocery shopping while on the clock.  It only takes a few minutes and it's not as if those few minutes are going to make a difference in the amount of work that gets done.  Yes, you could say that those minutes add up but in most cases when your work day is over, those missing minutes don't matter.

Depends if they want to get rid of you or not . Easy way to trash a dead wood full time worker.

Stop referring to clerks covered by union contracts--department heads, leads--as "managers".  It's confusing, as the answers here attest.

You aren't wrong. i'm just saying that in my experience it depends on the store, and it's management. But yes, that is a good rule of thumb in order to cover your butt. :P

you have worked for Kroger for over 25 years and yes your experience matter...but in my store department managers and store managers are doing whatever they want to do.... they yell at people and they do the same thing themselves

Different rules/standards for different people. No point in saying anything as you'll just make enemies as a result.

At my store, I see management frequently walking around with drinks that they bought, but that's a bad example to set when employees aren't allowed to have drinks while on the clock. I see employees - particularly produce, drug/GM and file maintenance - buy drinks at Starbucks when on the clock and not on break and they walk around with these drinks while working. I don't say anything because it's none of my business and again, why make enemies?

I just do what I can and keep my mouth shut. I could go to management about things that I see that are against policy or involve the stealing of time, but I choose not to because I feel it's wiser to worry about myself.

It's obviously bad form for any employee let alone a manager to do their shopping while on the Clock.  Just look at how even you - one employee - question this practice.  A manager needs to be cogniscent  their every action & live well above the normal standards expected by them.  Of course they are human & flawed so they tend to screw up a lot.

I agree to most of your reply. They are human beings and tend to screw up a lot ???? well no this is not the case.. from my experience the former kroger employees who became manager were mostly bullies and control freaks when they were normal associates. Thats how they thought they can do what they do best, without anyone questioning. These people yell at you for not shopping or doing something on the clock and then turn around and do the same thing right away in front of your eyes... I see this each & everyday. No point of reporting them as the HR, Store manager, co managers, department managers all patt each other backs.

Plus you do all the job and they get bonus ?? how is this non profit sharing business even fare ?

There has to be a better way than this. I get beyond frustated everyday, without any resolution. How to write these people up and get them fired ???
