Hi, so I've been with Kroger for quite a few months now (8 to be exact), and I was hired in as a CC. Now, I have had seniority over quite a few newer CCs, and I am one of the "best CCs in our store" according to a few of the front end supervisors. I always come in when they need me, I stay late when they ask, and "I make sure stuff gets done" according to my supervisors. I do these things, because most of the other Ccs are too lazy to do things themselves, and because I want to be a good employee.
So, about 5 months in, I began to ask the front end manager if I could try cashieering, and she said yes, but I'd have to have a month due to seniority. So a month goes by, and I go to ask her, and she says I don't interact with the customers enough, despite being very helpful and friendly to customers. I accept this, and then I start to see all the other CCs under me get promoted. So I ask about a month later, and she says the same thing.
Should I be speaking to a Store Manager and not the front end manager? It seems like she is only promoting the people she is friends with, which in my case, I rarely talk to her, as I'm talking to customers, sorting go-backs, etc.

What she REALLY means is what she REALLY thinks but is too much of a coward to say it:
You're slow (mentally)
You're unattractive
Those are the sad truths of what she, and anybody on her same level of management who she has talked to with about you, thinks too. Here are your solutions:
Talk to THE store manager, not any co-managers, or HR.
Switch to another department. You're obviously a good worker and you'd be a great fit in departments where work ethic is both highly appreciated and in demand.
If you are a girl, Produce would probably be the best. Produce is actually a hard department that is understaffed in a lot of stores and do not have enough "good workers". If you have work ethic and are not lazy, but Front End does not appreciate it, go to Produce. If you are a man, you should try Dairy, Frozen, or Produce.
Do not tolerate their subtle disrespect, go to another department and flourish there, show them you are actually capable. Front End is for pretty boys and cute girls who don't want to do any work at all besides make $14.50/hr smiling and talking trash all day. No real work at all. In other departments, you'll actually learn some real experience that you can use when you move jobs or stores.
talk to your store manager about it. how old are you by the way?
i was hired as a CC but trained as a cashier my first day, took me 6 months to be promoted to cashier even though i was cashiering almost every shift before that.
sometimes they will promote CCs to cashiers because they are lazy and cashiering allows the FES to watch them easier so thats why maybe people under you get promoted.
either talk to your store manager or write a note to your FEM or ACSM telling them how much you want to be cashier and what you can provide.
Ignore the poster that told you to ignore the above poster. If you're not the chatty type, then maybe front end isn't for you. Most people I know never look back once they leave the front end.
In my store, a lot of people's goal is to get off the front end as soon as possible. I know I would have HATED working on the FE. i'm in a service department, so i still deal with customers, but to do nothing but ring people up and deal with every customer all day, no thanks.

I think that is the goal at every store. Surprisingly, cashier and bagger are also the most applied-for positions BY FAR. They really struggle at hiring in other departments.
