Asked to extend hours to be put back on SCO
Permalink

So, I've been with my store for over 2 years now... One of the few that have been there since the store opened...

Ive done SCO since day one, but last year I started school so I changed my availability and since then I would do SCO  twice a  week, and be on a register the other two... In the beginning I'd only get 18 hours a week, starting from about August of last year to about May this year.... I'd sometimes get more than 18 but for a few months, maybe 3 or 4 that's all I got. And while I loathed it... I completely understood as my availability was pretty limited so I was just lucky to get that much... Then from May to July, a SCO cashier had to leave for some time for medical reasons. I got nothing but 30 that whole time and it was great! Once she came back... from July to now I'd averaged about 24 hours every week. And I've been quite content with that. 24 hours for me right now is just fine. I didn't go back to school, but I do plan on going back for something entirely different so for now, 24 hours is a-okay with me...

Again, I've never voiced my concerns about hours ever... The only time I complained was when the cashier came back and how she not only got her 30 hours back (and me get stuck back in a register which was fine I'd suppose) but she gets every weekend off now... and now I seem to never do All while getting less hours...) But this I'd mentioned a loooooong time ago,  back in mid July.

id had a really weird schedule this week, but for the first time since the SCO cashier came back I got 29 hours this week... She still got her 30 but I was quite surprised... 24 was fine but I was happy to get the 29!

And then today.... I'm on a register, I even stay an extra hour because it's packed and I'd no idea there wasn't another cashier coming in to relieve me so I waited for nothing (but now I've got 30 hours so it's fine) and as I'm about to leave I get asked by my manager if I was still in school... I'd said no, not now why? And I get asked if maybe I could possibly extend my availability... which was fine I suppose. But then they say... it's because, and I quote, so that she can give me more hours... So that I can be put on SCO more again...

I dunno but it REALLY struck me as odd? I mean, I know I've done nothing wrong on a register. My ring tender, I've been number one quite a few times! We've got new people who do SCO now too when I'm not on it so... it literally just came outta no where...

My original availability was open until I went to school, then I left it open on Sundays and Fridays and all the other days I was available from 6am to 2pm.... I mean I've no problem extending it but the reasoning for it just seems odd.

Im actually not buying that it's to give me more hours... why say that when my hours have been perfect? And you've just given me 29? But if it's to be back on SCO I still can't help but wonder why that is... Since ive done nothing wrong... Just seems odd. After over a  year to ask/say that....

....thoughts?

At first I just blew it off but now I have to admit I'm getting a liiiiiiitttle worried for what the real reason may be :/ .....

Update:

So, as it turns out one of our supervisors is leaving...

SO I'm 'needed' at SCO, and my schedule needs to be more open....  So that someone else can get moved up to Supervisor.

I have to open my schedule up... so that someone can get promoted...

...

I think I'm going back to school now.

Have you discussed with your CSM and ACSM what you would like to be scheduled to do? Sometimes, you have to be persistent and speak up every three or four weeks before your words will be taken seriously. Alternatively, if that doesn't or hasn't worked, if you have any interests in other departments, perhaps you should start speaking with other department heads to see if a department transfer would be beneficial for both you and the department.

Another update:

Turns out it didn't matter whether I wanted to change my availability or not... They did it for me.

My approved availability is still the same... But I've been scheduled two days outside of it... I thought we weren't allowed to do that.

But sure enough, new schedule has me working outside my availability and nothing was changed on those two days....

Should I even bother changing it now? Would it matter..? I'm not mad but damn... If I was gonna open up my schedule I'd have at least liked to pick the days and hours... and what if I wanted to go back to school...?

Really weird. I thought they couldn't schedule you outside your availibilty but turns out it's not the case. Ah well...
