Does anyone know what the company loss prevention rules are for short-change?

 

Here's the scenario: About a week ago I had a customer buy some things that came up to 10.71. I told her the amount. She dug in her pocket and pulled out a wad of cash which was a 10 and a 1 rolled up inside the 10. So I said that is 10.71 out of 11 and gave her the 29 cents in change. I went on to what ever I needed to do next (no customer) when the lady returns to me and said I gave you a twenty. I replied no you gave me a 10 and a 1. She reiterated, "I gave you a 20." At this point my shift came over so I said to her "I need a count down." My shift refused to count my drawer down and gave the customer the change as if she gave me a 20.  Now my shift claims she believed me and just wanted the customer gone. But I feel like my shift didn't have my back and now the customer knows she can get by with shortchanging the cashiers at my store.

I saw the store manager today and wanted to talk it over. She basically said to suck it up and she wasn't going to sweat a 10 dollar loss. But I want to know if this is how it normally goes with Kroger. I have worked other retail and no other time have I been denied a count down since it protects both myself and the customer.

 

AFter the customer left I finally did get the shift to count my drawer down and yep it was 10 short.

Your supervisor was totally wrong.  Any time there is a question as to whether or not you shorted a customer, they are suppose to count the drawer down.  That's standard policy.  Anyway, when a customer hands you cash, don't put it in your drawer and then give out their change.  Put the money they give you on top of your register first.  Give them their change making sure you tell them how much you're giving them back and then put the money in the drawer.  That way if they say they gave you a twenty rather than a ten, you have the money they gave you right there in front of you as evidence to the contrary.  Counting their change back to them also keeps them from saying you didn't give them the correct change.  Here's another tip.  Never re-open your drawer  if a customer wants you to change a bill or pay with a different bill after you've given them their change.    Send them to the customer service desk.  You have to be really careful with short change artists this time of year.

Agreed. I've only checked once. One of our lanes was a 'cash only' lane and my last customer's total came out to $20.00 and they handed me a $50.00 which meant they'd get $30.00 back. I counted it out and they left. One half our later they came back stating they have me $100.00 and wanted their change. I told them they gave me a $50.00 and they had gotten their change. They kept insisting that I had done it wrong. I, getting frustrated told them they can speak to my supervisor if they THINK I did wrong. Both my supervisor and FEM verified that they had gotten the correct change. They then apologized and changed their demeanor to happy. Before they left I heated them mutter. "****! Had to ****ing check didn't you?!?" And walk out.

Yep. I had to '****ing check.' Because it's my job to do so.

I know for my division once the drawer is closed, it is closed. If there is a question of counting the drawer, the cashier must do it and call for a supervisor. Another way our cashiers prevent short changing is the amount is input into the register as our drawers are self weighing before the drawer will open, and if the register isn't happy with something after it is re closed, it'll alert the cashier and lock down thus requiring an automatic pickup and count down before the lockout can be disengaged.

Our customer service reps are the only ones with a manual key to the drawer to do till swaps. Do you guys not use a change dispenser at the end of the check lane to distribute change so the cashier may focus on their drawer. Any change from outside an order is required by policy to be handled at customer service.
