I've been working in produce for about a year now and only called in sick one other time. I take care of my nephew and Saturday night he got really ill and I stayed up all night caring for him. He was still really i'll the next morning, so I called in at 8:00 a.m to inform the manager that I wouldn't be able to cover my shift at 2:00 pm that day, due to the illness of my nephew.
Anyway, fast forward to tonight(Monday) night. After about 5 hours into my shift I get summoned into the manager's office where I'm met by 2 co-managers and the store manager. I'm told that I called in too early and that that my excuse wasn't a legitimate reason to miss work. I'm told that I have 2 choices...to move to the front end or quit. They also informed me that I'd get no more than 16 hours a week. Anyway,I was so angry that I quit on the spot. I've never been written up and have no history of being late or frequently calling in sick.
No, I didn't sign anything. I'm sure I'm screwed and even knew that was their intention. That's why they waited until the end of my shift to ambush me with 3 managers. I'll call the union tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath.
Called in too early? They would have bitched if you had waited too.
They wanted you out, for whatever reason. Once management decides they don't like you, they will make your life a living hell. Fight this with everything you have. Even if you don't want the job back. Just give them the revenge they deserve.
Yeah, my union steward didn't have many nice things to say about the store manager. Told me that this guy has been a thorn in his side for years. I'm still not sure that I even want the job back.
