Could a Dept. Head ever consider it a no call, no show if they call an employee on their day off to come in and cover for someone and they don't hear back from them?

As far as I know, this hasn't happened at my store thus far. But I was just curious if it is a thing that could ever happen. As it does seem that we(in the Deli/bakery) are getting more call offs at times and more folks needing to cover somebody. Kind of to the point where it seems they will block out someone's schedule to just two days of them actually working and then the rest of the week you have off, just SO they can possibly call you in.

To which, I didn't mind the first few times I covered for somebody(and appreciate the extra funds in my bank account). But now it's almost like every other week. And with me being scheduled either hella early in the morning to help open the bakery or on closing(sometimes back to back). I tend to value my days off a bit more so I can get regular rest and get some of my regular stuff done that I need to. And sometimes, I will be honest, I just don't answer the call when I see it's them or my dad says I'm unavailable, and I just never call em back.

So could not calling them back be considered a no call, no show(most especially as they seem to consider part-timers are just sitting by the phone and on call at about ANY time at all)?

Absolutely not.  If you are not scheduled, you have no obligation to respond  to any of their requests.  For all they know, you could be gone all day.  However, that's not the point.  Your day off is yours to do whatever you want with to it.

Thanks, I hadn't thought so. Although the back up and sometimes the bakers give you the stink eye for it.

Why are you letting the bakers tell you what to do?  They're not in charge.  I know because I am one.

Nope. If it's your day(s) off, then it's YOUR days off. NOT to be on call. They can deal with it. I myself, have (and still do) ignore calls on my days off. I don't owe them an explanation, just say I am busy and have plans. They use to ask what are those plans and if I am willing to cancel them out and get back to them IF time permits. I tell them 'my plans are N.O.Y.B. (None of ya business, however, that pisses them off so I stopped telling them that when my schedule went " funny" for a week) but point is, your days are your days. Enjoy them

I think of it as a test to see how you'll react or if you'll come in and want the hours. They do this to me also. I always show when they call. Although they haven't called me in lately, they've just changed the schedule on me and given me less hours. All that does is gives me a break/vacation from the chaos. I'll take the hours, but it isn't going to hurt me if the give me less.

Just remember, the first time you answer and go in after being called, they got you. Now you will be the go-to person every time they need someone.

Yep, I ONLY do that IF I feel like it coming in. But if they screw me over when I need a big favor from them, I keep it well in mind. When corporate comes a callin' and they are desperate for help, guess what? My phone battery just "died" or I was "out of town" and "forgot" my phone.

I know the bakers aren't officially in charge. But I'm just saying that when I have to work the next day at butt crack of dawn. They are the first ones to be like "we tried to call you" and make it sound like it's your own personal fault that the bakery is going to hell in a hand basket cause you didn't pick up the phone.

Which normally I don't pay much heed to. But when you have as many folks in my bakery talking about people all the time to each other and the DH and back up managers behind their backs. It just dawned on me around the time I posted this question, if there is enough chit-chatting going on about me not coming in. Is it possible for someone that actually HAS authority to consider my actions as something that could get me into trouble or not.

Which one would think is a pretty ****ty thing to occur. But with some folks, you just never know what could be going through their brains. And even though I know I do all my work when I am scheduled and have no beef with anybody really. Even freaking arrive on time, not just a minute or two before I'm supposed to be there. So I am putting in real time and my best efforts. But it still makes you wonder at times what a co-worker might have the DH thinking about you with you being aware of it. And I just didn't want my DH to start thinking I'm flaky cause someone is whispering junk in his ear about me.

Thanks to everyone else too that responded to my topic. I'm definitely learning my lessons for sure about accepting filling in for folks at times. They definitely can make your schedule wonky to say the least.
