It is common courtesy to speak English only while at work. Google English only at work.
If you are speaking to a coworker, you should speak English so other co workers don't suspect you are talking about them.
If a Spanish speaking customer needs assistance, then definitely communicate with them in Spanish. Some companies pay extra for bi lingual speakers.
I learned Spanish in high school. I used to read and speak well enough to hold a conversation. I don't use it often enough since so I lost most of it.
It is not a common courtesy to speak english at work. STFU! Common courtesy is saying hello to your coworkers and not talking crap about them rather than making xenophobic assumptions about them because they speak another language!
At my store the store manager is telling the Spanish speakers that on kroger time it is English only. Is this actually a rule?
If this was said within the past 7 days write a grievence and send it to the union and copy kroger helpline. Your store manager is in big trouble! He is putting the company at risk of lawsuits and needs to be stopped FOR HIS SAKE and the company's sake. It is your duty to tell not to hurt him but to help him. Multimillion dollar lawsuits have bedn launched on the back of someone making a stupid remark like this.

Management is allowed to set any rules they like, as long as they stipulate punishments with the rules.
This does probably run against one or two immigrant protection laws/regulations at the federal level.
A grievance should settle the problem should you face any discipline about this.
That said, management was willing to go there. There will be revenge if you go out of your way to fight this. Remember that before you make any move. Noble are the acts of the martyr, while often smart is the surrender of the slave.

To be clear. I mean to say that management will do things that are immoral or illegal. To say that they are legally permitted, no. To say that generally corporate doesn't give a **** until they get sued or grieved, yes. Nearly every store violates some angle of federal labor law as it relates to labor relations, its no surprise that they would violate anti-discrimination law.
I am speaking of the reality in which, in an at-will state anyone may be fired at any time without cause. Even if they aren't legally allowed to make a rule, they can still fire someone for it and use a different justification on paper. That person can try to get their job back via a legal battle or the union. The union has a bad habit of losing easy cases like this one in many areas, and if you are working at Kroger you probably don't have the money to fund a legal fight. So your odds of fighting this kind of thing are pretty bad.
Its a fight worth fighting, but the problem is that the company has enough power in this area that the law can't really protect the clerk.

our store does a spanish welcome to kroger etc on the PA system few times daily. this is when our only latino worker is working. she speaks english okay, but is more comfortable in her native tongue
