I Absolutely Adore the New U-Scan Software
Permalink

Has anyone else's store been upgraded? It makes everything much more simple! Its just like a register with options for voiding items, price override, and suspending transaction with a scan of a barcode it prints out each time you sign in. And it doesn't call you over for every little thing anymore. And the best part? They got rid of the handhelds so gone are the days when they make you bag and monitor U-Scan.

I think our's was supposed to be upgraded as well when we moved into our new store. However, I still see some glitches in our systems at times. Like the volume is super loud on one of them. And they don't want you to adjust it. It will have issues at times with the bar codes. Especially with regard to you having already scanned your item and it is clearly on the screen. But it's like take that out of there it's not scanned. Doesn't always read the 3 bucks off coupons that we get from our managers either half the time. And even one time I came in to open Deli, and I saw that they had 5 of them all down getting worked on. So yea, I think there are still some bugs in our system with regards to U scan.

Oh man I wish they did this in our store. They upgraded everything to the barcode system, but kept our handhelds. So now the U-Scan person is still told to multitask, but any time the handheld beeps they have to go and scan the barcode. FUN!

I don't work the UScans, so can just give the shopper's experience:

It doesn't natter quite as much as the old ones did--but yes, it's louder.

It doesn't call the attendant for help as often--but still way too much. I hate it that as the customer, I get no feedback whatsoever as to what I did to trigger it. And I really hate it that I can't cancel and back out to a previous screen, so that on a busy day, I stand there looking like an idiot to all the people behind me.

That said, generally the display is clearer, more informative.

I really wish that when I scan my 123 card, it would recognize me as a frequent flier, and not natter so much.

I really, really wish that I need to do something, like move my purchases to the cart, it would give me enough time to actually do that before nagging at me. I KNOW, OK? Just give me a second or two!

At our store we seem to be having MORE glitches with the U_Scan software then before the change-over.  The new screens look nice and "pretty', but the volume is WAY too loud and we have had complaints by customers to the effect of "I don't want to have all the other shoppers in the vicinity listening to the description and pricing  and discount of each item I buy.....it's ridiculous and annoying".

HOWEVER, just a simple tap or two on the "VOLUME" button on the screen will silence it. I silence mine (when I am buying groceries, as I don't actually work front end). I understand the default volume goes back up when I check out before the next customer walks up to that screen.

As a customer, I hate the new u-scan system. To me, it's much slower than the old system because it has to stop and say the price of an item out loud.

I don't work u-scan so i don't know how people like it as an employee but from what i've understood they get a lot of complaints from customers.

My biggest pet peeve with U-Scan is when I scan an item and it says, "Please place the item in the bag."  I go to place the item in the bag and it says, "Please scan the item before placing it in the bag."  I'm left there holding an item that I've already scanned and it won't let me bag it.  I'm certainly not going to scan it again.  My next pet peeve is when I get ready to check out and it says it's not accepting cash.   The attendant should put a sign on the bot in question.

^ Our new U-Scan registers inform customers with a message along the lines of "Please be aware this register is not accepting cash at this time" in the form of big text near the top of the screen upon tapping the touchscreen to begin, so I don't know why yours don't.

I don't work on the front end anymore, but I use self-scan/U-scan whenever I go on break and the new software seems to work fine. The self-scan attendants seem to think it's a big improvement, too. Apparently, they still have the handheld and supposedly it's "compatible" with the new software more or less, but they no longer use it.

Even the old self-scan/U-scan software was a heck of a lot better than Walmart's, that's for sure. Walmart's seem far, far more sensitive as far as weight goes and so it frequently would stop me and I'd have to wait for attendant assistance. A real pain.

I'll add another grievance about the U scan. I was just in my store earlier and bought some of the Bacon Habanero pretzel crisps and some of the nacho dip(was pretty damn tasty from the sample I had tried a couple of days ago). Anyway, long story short. I scan the first bag of them And low and behold the damn U Scan went from speaking English to being full on Espanol, like out of nowhere. Then fussed at me about the nacho dip, as it didn't want to read those bar codes either. So yea, U scan is great in theory, but in actuality, not so much.

Clearly, if you bought nacho dip, it knew you wanted it to speak spanish. But jokes aside, I think there will always be flaws with U-Scan but it has improved a great deal, and made my life a lot easier. I also enjoy getting to talk with customers more with the new system

We still have the handhelds, but we do have the barcodes.
Honestly not a big fan of the system. Wasn't trained on the old system for long (literally had 2 or 3 training days before they "upgraded") so I hadn't had time to get used to the way things were. Other u-scan attendants who had known how to run things for years were making a lot of noise about the upgrades for a while.
Since we upgraded the machines are even more finicky than before, more glitchy, and customers overall find the things extremely annoying. Reading everything off slowly, forcing them to slow down their pace etc.
It's not too bad. But it's not my favorite.

I get so annoyed with them I turn the volume all the way down.

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

"Place the item in the bag."

Gotta agree with this one, as a customer. It does not give you enough time to do something before nagging.
