Told a customer to kiss my ass Sunday
Permalink

I work in the meat departmen, a customer came to the counter & and asked is that all the shrimp that you have.  I told him yes, he walks away, then comes back & say that he needs a least a pound.  Weight up all the shrimp that we had it comes to .80 close to a pound that it's going to get.  Hand it to customer, he never even bother to look at the package.  Tells me that I have a communication problem, wait what you asked for said product to be close to a pound, I gave you said product close to a pound.  He says that not the point, well what is?  He starts to cuss me out, tells me he a paying customer & not a food stamp customer unlike myself.  I told him I'm not on food stamps & what does that to do with anything.  Then he challenges me to fight him so he can get a lawsuit started.  I said nothing then he tells me to get a ****ing manager now you piece of ****.  I told him to kiss my ass.  He leaves comes back talking about I'm going to jail,  I told I him it would be a cold day in hell that I go to jail.  He's bragging that's he going to smack me in the back of my head when they take me out of the building.  I told him that if you touch me I will **** you up.  He throws said package at me but he misses, then I told him if that package would of hit me, I would take him in the back & show him what's fresh & friendly is all about.  Manager finally shows up I go the back to get started cleaning the back room.  Manager comes in the back room they have everything on tape & customers & associates saw & heard everything that he did & say.  So he got told to leave.

Sorry you had to go through that. But your story totally made my morning. I swear, I don't know what is wrong people these days. You do what they ask and are still beyond ungrateful. Thankfully they saw it wasn't your fault this dude was a ****ing moron.

I hate to hear about that kind of situation happening. Sorry about your experience.

I know some customers will never be happy, but, as a matter of routine,  I would always definitely make sure I don't just hand him the package (without saying anything, which you seem to have done?), BUT I would say something like :

"Sir, I know you asked for a pound of shrimp, but this is the very best I can do.......it was all we had left.  It came to about .80 of a pound (4/5s of a pound) so I just wanted to let you know how much you have in this package."  If you directly told him that, and made it completely clear exactly how much you gave him, and waited for him to answer you, he can't pretend later that you didn't communicate with him.

File a complaint with Kroger Ethics.  You shouldn't have to deal with this.  Kroger needs to enact a Customer is Right and Customer is Wrong Book.  We shouldn't be treated like trash and they win for it.  Don't let customers walk all over you.  You can pick up another dead end job by the end of the week if you earn minimum wage.  Customer created a hostile work environment for you and continues to discriminate against you.  I suggest filing a complaint with Kroger Ethics.  (Link above).  You can also take it a step further by filing an official complaint with the US Gov.  I've filed about six against my last store for the customer harassment hazing I endured while employed there for 7+ years.

He watched the screen like a hawk & he went into his tirade before I can even explain what I just gave him. When I told him I gave you what you asked for you saw it clear as day.  He lied & said that I just gave him the package.

I am glad that management stuck by you. At my store they give customers a gift card for treating employees bad.

Lol, good for you for standing up for yourself, but maybe next time just walk away. I guess you have decent management though. They threw him out like he deserved. At my store, they would have given him the store for free and written up the associates, but then my managers suck. i once got yelled at after a customer got aggressive with me and reached over ripped items he didnt pay for out of my hands, then proceeded to walk out the store.

no this customer was looking for trouble. he would have been upset and still acted like a jerk. it wouldnt have mattered how nice the associate was, because the customer wanted to start a problem

It's getting worse I don't know what people problems are cause I have other experiences, where customers are just rude & when they cross the line I have to defend myself as a man.  I like this job but I don't need this job.

Man, that made my day! Serves him right for being escorted to the door! Good to see that your management backed you up, too! Trust me, there are a lot of people like this out there in the world and they would love nothing better than to scapegoat an employee or start a war...Yes, it's important to put customers first, but I've seen some customers throw some downright hissy-fits, even yelling halfway across the store about the rudeness of an employee when I know for a fact that the employee in question wasn't being anything of the sort...In all my years of working, I've seen everything from shoplifters to scammers to schizos, and it has gotten to the point that NOTHING surprises me anymore! The best thing is to keep doing your job...Your GOOD customers, who give you nothing but praise, will outrank the bad ones in the end...If you've been a stellar employee and everyone else in the building knows it, NOTHING a customer can or will say otherwise should be of any relevance or importance to you...If a particular customer's behavior has been a problem in the past and they continue to act that way, eventually that same behavior will be their undoing!

We're supposed to greet everyone who comes into our stores, but that doesn't give anyone the right to treat you like a doormat!
