Hiring manager possibly prejudice
Permalink

I live in a fairly white area to be fair.

But I see a lot of people come in to check on their applications and I notice more of a dismissive attitude to anyone who is really unattractive or someone of color.

I don't know these people, or their work history so I'm not for certain, to be fair.

I know for fact our HR is admittedly homophobic. And this person did make a weird comment to me about liking to hire attractive people to work on the front end. Because "if you had someone waiting on you, they should be pleasing to the eye, don't you think?" (HR's words)

Also for the 5+ years I've worked for this company I haven't seen a single person of color get hired.

We've had a few people get transferred from another store.

I don't know if my imagination is running wild or if I have a reason to be concerned.

Or if my concerns are worth addressing how to go about it.

Look at it this way..  4 exact houses

Black house

Brown house

Yellow house

White house

I bet most people would rather have the white one

OK  White neighborhood. I get it

Most customers are going to feel more comfortable around their own kind. Maybe not fair, but hey....  Customers First!!

Look at it this way... Im white. Why in the world would I want to work in an all black store in an all black neighborhood. That is a recipe for disaster. Again, not right, maybe not fair, but that's the way life is.

You cannot pick your skin color, but you can pick where you want to live and work. Why in the world would someone black want to work in an environment where everyone thinks youre a thief, because that is what they are thinking. Again, not right, not fair, but that's how its been forever. That is human nature. You cant change that.

The thing about the front end is true regardless of race, sex, creed, religion, or anything. Kroger deliberately puts attractive people on the front end because they do actually look nicer to customers. That is something that will never change. And most young "attractive people" do not apply to Kroger to become a meat cutter, produce truck person, overnight stocker, drug GM stocker, etc. They simply want to be cashiers so they can talk and be on their phones and don't have to do anything very physical.

And I don't believe you about being with this company for 5 years but never seeing a fellow employee who is not white. There aren't THAT many white neighborhoods in the US anymore, especially where a Kroger store may be. I notice you put more emphasis on unattractive people than non-white people though. So I think you know you're FOS.

I beg to differ on that one. As Arabs and Koreans do it quite a bit from what I've seen in most areas.

True on the first part. And very narrow view on the second. I'm black grew up in a majority white and bi-racial town. Because my parents wanted better opportunities for myself and cousin that they looked after til he graduated college. And why do we stay and work in an environment where people think we are thieves? Because that is the problem with the world. They think they know every last single black person or person of color or culture and paint everyone with one hell of a wide paint brush and call it one and done.

To which, I say that is their prerogative and missing out on knowing genuine people. On my end of things, I value the people I have met and known of all colors. Even if many are majority white. And I will not let someone else's views decide where, how, and which way I make money for my family. Because they can't see past the color of my skin. I'm in it for the green and the experience. Til someone can offer me a better opportunity or I find one on my own, or if miracle of miracles they offer to take care of my family and pay my bills for me. Then I'm going to KEEP on being a black person working in a majority white town, white store, and white world.

Because as you said yourself. We can't pick someone else's skin color and neither can they. But we can all make do so we aren't screwing up each other's lives any more than we already have.

You must not be familiar with Cincy district 1...

The smaller town stores up here have no black employees because the towns outside of Dayton as you go further north are very white lol.  My home store has like 1 black employee and my current store has no black employees.except one Co manager and there's like 1 Asian kid on front end.

And I'm not saying its racist... Just not many people of color live up here.

Here we go again with racism, discrimination, blah, blah, blah. Most blacks are more racist than whites. Most homosexuals are more discriminating than heterosexuals. Blacks always use the color of their skin as an excuse, just like homosexuals use the fact their sexual preference as an excuse. We can't stop any type of discrimination, if people are going to continually use it as an excuse. I don't see the color of someones skin or try to figure out their sexual preference, when I talk to people. What I see are their personality, communication skills, intelligence, appearance (are they clean), and work ethic (in that order). What color you are and your sexual preference means nothing to me.

In reality it all depends on the neighborhood with employee candidates, but if you interview well and fit the role.....you should be hired! I work in a very culturally diverse community and the store is staffed the best/most effective with a diverse group of associates. I interact everyday with every many different groups of customers and they all know my name! If this HR-Manager is really like this they need to be gone!

In the eye of the beholder as the saying goes.

I'm gonna have to ask some of my white coworkers how they manage to not burst into flames or melt like the Wicked witch when they interact with the rest of us mud people.

Because damn, the way some of you here talk about the horrifying prospect of working around non-whites it's a miracle that they've survived.

My store has a mostly non-white staff and still a good 60% of our customer base is white. What sorcery is this? I mean, I don't know how they do it?

As far as "Front End being for attractive people" well you do have to be "inviting" and some physical attractiveness is part of that.

But it's mainly because women (of all ages) and minors dominate the Front for a myriad of reasons.

It's a less physical job which many women prefer, and it's entry level hence the minors.

I've worked in a perdominantly white community before for about a year (retail, not Kroger) nobody suspected that I was a theif.

Seriously, are you guys from Alabama?
