I work in the bakery and I absolutely hate our big old bread slicer. I've used it a lot of times but I've always been weary about slicing baguettes, as this slicer is for slicing many large loaves instead of a thin 2" baguette. The "pusher" on the slicer doesn't even meet the blades, it stops about 1.5" away. So when slicing baguettes, you have to use another ****ing baguette as a stick to push it through. This doesn't always work because a baguette can be too hard to be pushed like that, it can also get stuck on the blades, even being more of a hassle. I'm scared of using something harder than a baguette to push, as I don't want to break the blades or the slicer. So sometimes I'm forced to use my fingers to hold down the baguette and push it through.
So I cut my finger today. And before you say that I should've use a cut resistant glove, we don't even have any in our bakery (but I guess I could've asked deli). I tell the other girl in the bakery that I'm using the slicer for baguettes anymore. She says that I need to file an incident report with the manager and that I could get written up for "improperly using equipment despite being trained." Well I dont think using one baguette as a stick to push another thru the slicer is ridiculous. I've looked up that same model, it's for slicing large loaves not tiny baguettes. I just wish the store would buy a better newer slicer like the ones I've seen at the Smiths marketplaces. The manager didn't write me up but I hate how they immediately want to cover their own ass before showing any care to me.
I'm not sure what to do. Is this a big enough deal to contact OSHA and say we need a new bread slicer
