Grocery Manager Back-up
Permalink

Ok so I got hired back to Kroger been gone for a year, another job situation. So been back for a week and my store manager has already made me full time and wants me to fill in for the grocery back up.

Now before i left I was a frozen food lead so I was familiar with the handheld.  Knew how to order,  review order,  scanned backstock,  did my ad changes,  markdown items and all that.

But as a grocery back up what is everything I should know. Like today they had me scan all the lows and holes. But I'm not fully understanding the concept of why though what is the point of it? Now if you do a residual scan on your backstock your numbers should be right if you keep up with it and I know people haven't been doing cause I caught several things the system said we had butvyet wasn't on the shelves.  Now they can't all be wrong.

So what I want to know is just some general advice to help me out with this position

Lows & Holes is based on running all the Active backstock uboats before the truck is ran.  After Thanksgiving, I doubt the Uboats are set up with Active verse Slow movers...

Lows & Holes is a triple check.

District managers know we don't always have time to run backstock everyday.  I do cherry pick low products off backstock carts because I know my daycrew will zero them out if I don't.

Nightcrew runs live loads and some backstock.  Left over stock from the live stock is scanned in residual scan.  Daycrew comes in and scans lows and holes.  Also should be scanning items that are overflowing off the shelf.

If BOH is a few off, those might be in a customers' shopping cart, in a shelf extender or clicklist has them.  I would not adjust those numbers.  If BOH is a case off and hasn't sold(F3) a case since it was delivered(CTRL O), then I would zero those out.  Know where your shippers are(F0), what is in your lane blocker baskets, on endcaps and in frozen ends.   Also check the new items cart before zeroing out too many items.

Lows & Holes is same as daily scan they used to do a few years ago except they don't print out a replenishment list anymore.  If you do want a list, CTRL V while doing Lows & Holes will save that item.  I haven't figured out how to print the list yet tho....

I work nightcrew.  Ask specific questions and I will try to answer.

Backstock review = residual scan is done for items that you have left over after you fill your shelf. So you can maybe lower your minimum or fix your BOH, if that's causing you to have too much of some item - backstock. Sometimes it's ok to have backstock - if an item is a fastmover or on sale and you have someone on the afternoon or evening to replenish it.

Lows and Holes focuses on the opposite. You check why you don't have enough of something. Maybe your MIN is too low or your BOH is wrong, showing that you have the item when in fact you do not. If you do this every day, you can see the pattern of how fast or slow is something selling on weekdays and on weekends. Gives you a chance to maybe ISO order an extra case for the weekend, instead of raising your MIN, which would mess up your backstock for rest of the week.

I find the Lows and Holes the most useful report. I just wish they give us enough time to do it properly.

And your BOH numbers can suddenly go wrong for couple of reasons.

1. Another department took items off your shelf without doing an E40.
2. Product got trashed without being scanned out.
3. It's sitting somewhere in the go-back cart.
4. Got stolen.
5. A clueless new employee doing the holes scan zeroes something out, just because the shelf is empty.
