Transfer to new store
Permalink

I'm part time and have worked for kroger for about two months. A new store is opening next month and  is four miles from my house as opposed to the sixteen miles of my current store. The store manager doesn't want me to transfer. He wouldn't give a reason other than saying they have plans for me after the first of the year. What are my options? If i really want to transfer should i just quit and  apply for the new store?

Do you have any ideas what they mean by "plans"?

If you quit, it's unlikely you'll be hired back.

That's only if you quit without giving two weeks notice.  I'm sure the OP would have no problem quitting and then re-appying at another store.  The only thing they would lose is what little seniority they've accumulated.  To the OP: If you do quit and you've been paying union initiation fees, make sure you get a union card from the union steward so you don't have to pay union initiation fees all over again.

I'm honestly not sure what your options are.

I have transferred stores a total of two times. Both times, I needed to get permission from the store manager at my then-current store as well as permission from the store manager at the store that I wanted to transfer to. There may be another way, but my understanding is, you have to get the okay from both store managers for a transfer to happen.

If you've only been with Kroger for about two months, you are likely still on probation, which means if you push the issue, your current store manager could just fire you on the spot and that may make it hard or impossible to get a new job at the Kroger location that you want.

By plans they were talking about being the backup in my current department/training me to be a lead. I think they were just saying things to have fun with me. I worked for kroger for 2.5 years then quit to take care of a family member who passed away last month. I need the money but also need work to be as close as possible. I just wish they would at least work with me seeing as my situation is unpleasant and no fault of my own. But it sounds like i should just drop it since i can't afford to be fired. And then today they wanted me to go to home depot and get some nuts since we were missing some in the iron man holders and that seemed very odd to me. Is that a normal type of thing to happen?

Is this new store replacing another store? or NEW NEW store? You might be able to contact the District HR Coordinator and express your desire. If they are having issues hiring, they will jump at anyone with some experience wanting to transfer.

It's replacing my old store but turning into a HUGE marketplace.

Are you the original poster or a different poster?

Here, when they opened a Market Place to replace a current store, everyone had to reapply for their positions.  Only 3 department heads, 30% full timers and 30% of the part timers made it into the new store.  Anyone who didn't make the cut were given the option of transferring to one of 3 of the nearest stores.  The store manager and co managers were replaced also.

Usually, interest bids are posted before the grand opening.  We had a part timer get full time going into the new store.

Not unheard of to send a trusted employee on an errand.  You should have asked for gas money!

One time the produce department ran out of bananas on a Sunday.  The store manager sent my nephew to a competing grocery store to buy 12 cases.  "Big party with banana splits."  :)

Yep, I'm the op. I just can't think of why they would want to block the transfer of a part time newbie. Im totally expendable so why not just let me go?

I was sent on an errand even though I had to abandon my department. Apparently I was the only one the manager trusted. Got  paid to drive (on the clock) plus gas money. Nice little diversion.

If the new store is a Market Place replacing your current store, you have as good of a shot getting in there as anyone else. Sign the interest bids.

Not sure what state you are in.

Here, they bring in a store manager that specializes in closing stores.  And, to run a new Market Place, they bring in experienced and profitable managers.

To clarify, I quit from the store that is closing down and then rehired at another one. The new store is a market place and is replacing the store i used to work at. I guess I'm getting the full kroger employee experience now. Previously I worked as hard as i could and focused on doing a near perfect job. Now i just show up and go through the motions but for some odd reason the manager seems to favor me over the other employees. I filled out the transfer request but the manager wont sign it and i cant send it in unless it is signed.
