Without a calculator, without a pen and paper. Can you add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in your head, in real time? Like if I asked you to divide 247.34 by 3, could you do it in under two seconds?
I've never been good at mental math. Always had to write it down so I can better put things into columns. It's just free floating information my brain can't lock in on if it's something much larger than the simple equations and end up confusing myself more if I don't have pencil and paper on hand.
I can do it but certainly not in two seconds. I frequently do math without a calculator, especially for things like balancing a checkbook. Using a calculator it's easy to push a wrong button or forget tp put in the decimal point. Also, I believe when people rely too much on calculators and computers, their brains turn to mush. Use it lose it is what I say.
Well I ask cause a customer had a $247.34 order and they asked me to split it 3 ways so her and her two friends could pay it equally among their credit cards. As I got out my pen and paper, she stopped me right there and said "I got it." Looked at the screen for exactly two seconds, and said "I'd like to put $82.45 on this card."
I'm not going to say it was embarrassing, but I will say it made me wonder why I'm a cashier and can't do simple math in my head like that.

Maybe she did it while you were looking for a pen and paper.

Don't be embarrassed. A lot of people can't do decimals in their heads. Most people can only do basic math. Next time you're in a situation like that estimate it. Divide 247 by 3 which equals 82. Then tell them about 83 Dollars a piece.

Maybe when she asked you, she was actually asking her phone and it gave her the answer while you were still trying to figure it out. LOL!
