Store is suspending employees because they do not like the reason the employees called in. Makes no difference if the employer has reached the suspendibe offense This is a breach of contract and if every employee who received a three day suspension realised this the ever late store manager would realize the trouble he could be in for this action
you do not have to give a reason to call off. In the Columbus division you can call in speak to a manager and say I wont be able to make it in today. If they ask for a reason you can say I dont have to give one or if your nice (lol) say its personal. In order to be suspended you have to go through progressive discipline. They cannot just suspend you because they dont like you.
You can call off for any reason, but if you do give a reason you need to remember its needs to be "Personal, Sick or Family Situation". If someone would call off for "Prom", "Stuff to do" or whatever other reasons, its can basically be an auto write up. In my Divisions Contact I do not believe it gives approved reasons to call off, only tells you to give 2 hours notice. But in reality, how often are you calling off that the Store Managers it getting pissed at you ? I only called off 3 times because of being sick in 10+ years. Yes, your not going to bell the greatest every day, but how often are you sick to the point of not being able to function. I had times when I sounded horrible, but felt completely fine. Technically, you could be breaching the contract when your not arriving to work on time, not Greeting, Engaging, Thanking every customers or any other topic in the contact as these are "well established company rules".
Believe me, while I do not know the complete situation, If you want the Store Manager to follow every little rule/contact provisions.....you might as well just quit right now.
