We have been told safety is our number one priority. Customers and employees must remain on their feet. Then why is it when we utility clerks/courtesy clerks dont answer service calls up front, we get yelled at for it? Are we NOT supposed to do our sweeps PROPERLY? NOT do FAKE logs? Whenever we are on our sweeps we get b*tched at for not coming up front. They say customers first. Uhhh... SAFETY FIRST, customers SECOND. NOT the other way around.
So what if a customer has to bag their own groceries or if a checker has to?
So what if we are unable to do a carryout or put away a perishable go back or do a price check.
Whatever happened to the Utility and or Courtesy Clerks are NOT supposed to be called on their sweeps? Was that even a policy before? If so what happened to it? Why remove it?
So what if a customer has to bag their own groceries?!?
So what if a customer has to do their own carryouts?!?
Excuse YOU!! Yes, YOU!!
We are NOT supposed to have an attitude like that!!
I understand about sweeps but guess what??? If its I minor sweep then you put the broom aside out of the way, go up front, help bag a few orders then go back and finish off where you were. Unless it's a major mess or you are told specifically BY MANAGEMENT, to remain on your sweeps you do ask asked. Or if you prefer call a checks and and let one of the checkers know you are on sweeps. NOT OVER THE VOYCALL. that makes a customer believe that they are not important enough.
Dont get me wrong. Sweeps are important. And if a courtesy clerks calls and I answer the phone, I will do my best to let them be and ask other checkers to do the same. If they ignore my call up front, I WILL call repeatedly over and over. And they had better have a good excuse as to why they did not call back or let me know. (There was a major spill and they couldn't leave it unattended).
As for a do not disturb policy when sweeps? That was NEVER even a policy. EVER. So Thereforenthey never got rid of it because it NEVER existed.

Oh please...
If the customer is so important and is so valued, then Kroger would ensure all its stores were staffed properly so that customers would consistency receive the kind of service from start to finish that supposedly separates Kroger from its competitors. With the way stores are staffed, going up front hardly ever just means "bag a few orders". Every time the front end pulls utility clerks or people from another department up front to check, bag and/or get carts, those people fall even further behind than they already are thanks to stores being run on skeleton crews these days. Then they get yelled at by their department heads/management for things looking a mess. It's no wonder nobody is in a hurry to drop what they are doing to help the front end, especially when they aren't going to get any help in return.

You do NOT need to be a F*CKING D*CK about it. Yes, OP should not have that outlook towards his customers and front end but can you blame him? The UC/CC gets assigned sweeps and then gets pulled up front and even bi*ched at by fe heads because they dont come up, and the gets b*itched at some more by management for ignoring fe calls and missing sweeps. What do you expect them to do? I'm guessing your store isn't very clean if you guys keep pulling uc/cc from sweeps all the time. Hell, I'd ignore you too. My suggestion to OP is to talk to.management and see what is to be done. Let the ball bounce in management's court. If they say sweeps, then he's free to ignore ALL calls unless told by STORE MANAGEMENT otherwise.

OP, maintain your own integrity. Never log something as done if you arent comfortable with that. Never let them force you to lie if you arent ready to get thrown under the bus if something happens. Dont jeapordize your job so someone can get a bonus or a pat on the dick from district management.
That being said, take that advice and just do what people ask. If youre repeatedly called to bag, go and bag and dont log things as finished. Maybe keep a log for yourself when it happens, who called you and why, and keep it. If people threaten your job, thats what the union is for, and you have all that built against them for trying to screew you.
Safety is first in the eyes of liability only. They dont want customers to trip and fall or slip or get sick because lawsuits. Thats the only reason... its because the customer is actually first. It aint for you to have a clear priority. They dont want clear priorities, because theyd have less **** to blame on the people under them.

One of the front end managers makes her employees clock out for sweeps, you know, clocking out for a break. Dead serious. I don't work front end and I damn sure would never do something like that, but you have teenagers and kids and they're scared to say anything so they do it. So technically they wouldn't be able to go bag if they're on sweep duty, because they're clocked out.
I am a utility clerk in my store. I have enough to do on an 8 hour shift without having to worry about the front end. In our store courtesy clerks and utility clerks are on a different job code entirely. We are NOT to be called up to bag and if it is really tight, and we do get called, we are instructed to tell the cashier that we will help them with a couple of orders but we have to go back to OUR job duties. There are some customers who prefer to bag their own groceries and I don't think a customer bagging their own items is so bad especially in stores that are understaffed.
