I've heard "YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE" (the version by Debby Boone) exactly once in the last 4 years working at Kroger. That was on Valentine's Day of this year, when the In-store Audio Network also played "Close to You" by the Carpenters. I wouldn't actually mind hearing those songs once in a while. (Do you (OP) mean to tell us that they do play YLUML in your music rotation currently??? If so, your store must have a different lineup or genre.
Despite what the cynical "haters" say, ('it's too sugary, it's too banal, it's too corny, it doesn't have a truly deep meaningful message, it doesn't have a strong-enough beat......whatever), both are classic love songs of the '70s. Go and enjoy all the "DARK", "HARD-EDGED" unpleasant sounding songs you want, leave the positive songs for my listening pleasure.
You Light up My Life was one of the biggest hits of the 20th century, staying at #1 on the Billboard "Hot 100" pop song chart for 10 weeks in a row in 1977. It has a rather simple tune (so just what is wrong with that?), a positive message (so exactly what is wrong with that?), nice chords (what is wrong with that?) a singer with a reasonably good voice (what is wrong with that?), a good piano accompaniment (what is wrong with that?).
(Just in case the OP is actually referring in an oblique manner about the new "UPLIFTING" policy of Kroger (recycled from 4 years ago),well, OK, I can relate..........but the hit song is an entirely different matter.........it brings back great memories.........in my mind it has ZERO to do with Kroger or their policies) .
