Cart Exchange
Permalink

Is anybody else's store making them do what they call "cart exchange" at checkout? It's where we get a new cart for the customer and swap it out with the one they were using. If so, what are your feelings/thoughts about it?

Honestly, I think it's stupid. They claim it's more efficient to make checkout quicker, but it's really not. We already have customers complaining about it. It's a big waste of time.

They've always tried to enforce "bascart exchange", but it's really up to the baggers judgement at least at my store. If there's a bunch of heavy crap on the bottem, I usually don't use a new cart. If the customer has a butt load of stuff and the bags are backing up then I'll get a new cart. They can try to "enforce" it all they want, but it's not always practical.

I have never heard of this-----only time I get a new cart is if the customer has a quite large order and I don't want the items backing up on the belt

One reason why this is encouraged is to make sure nobody tries sneaking out of the store with anything on the bottom. Can't go "oh I forgot to pay for that" if you're taking a different cart out of the store.

Our store did that for a little bit. But for the last few weeks, I have not seen them do it. Like, at all.

At my store, it's completely optional.

We usually only do it for large orders since we run out of room on the bagger's side of the belt.

Yeah, this is one of those loss-prevention programs they re-introduce once in a while, then people realize it's way too tedious most of the time and give up for another year.

I've only seen this at my local Aldi stores. But never at any of the Kroger stores in the area. Besides that, given how busy the lanes get at my store at times and with so few baggers. I don't think they could execute a proper exchange with customers having rowdy kids and not paying attention being on cellphones and the like. So that's why I think they just let them take them out to the parking lot like usual and collect them back when they need to come back in.

That is stupid. We tried it for a week. Total crap. And what if there are no carts on the lot? Well...hunt one down. That's what they say. Meanwhile, the customers order is already bagged and they are out the door. With the cart they originally had. Go figure. Customers are complaining about it at my store as well. And they have a right to do so.

All stores are technically suppose to do it.  It works if you have the staff for it and the courtesy to do it.  Most don't do this.  I've yet to run into a store where they do it.  Last high volume store I tried this at it pissed the customers off as you walked away from the order to retrieve a grocery cart.  By the time you got back they bagged their groceries and were starting to walk out the door.

we used to do this and it worked pretty well. we have locking carts so were told to reuse the customer cart since that's the one passing through the register. if you have baggers and extra carts the exchange works well but it's kroger so you never have enough of either one doh
