I am Not A Morning Person, so I'd prefer to work 2-10 or so. (When left to my own devices my natural sleep schedule falls along the lines of 4 AM-noon.) As an added perk, that shift leaves the morning free if I want to get up early and run errands, with less traffic than in the evening.
(I typically work mornings now, which is a pain in the ass since I have to fight my body's natural inclinations constantly, taking melatonin to fall asleep early enough, resisting the urge for an after-work nap, and being a zombie in the morning until the coffee kicks in.)
There is such a thing as too late, though. I covered the Uscan late night shift full time for a while when no one else who could work that late and had cashier training was available. I honestly enjoy closing-- if I have to be a cashier I prefer closing over other shifts!-- but after a while I was waking up at 3 or 4 PM and not feeling sleepy until well after dawn.
I'm not a morning person, but I'd much rather work a morning shift to get it out of the way. When I worked full-time, I was working 8-4:30 and sometimes 7-3:30. Those are the ideal shifts for me. Now, I work 8-2 and 7-11 on Wednesdays due to having second job and going to school.
When I was working, I honestly preferred the 3:30pm-11pm shift. The managers were always too busy to annoy me with stupid stuff and they left at like 6-8pm so when it slowed down around 9pm I had time to do what needed to be done without much interference or annoyance. With morning shifts the managers became micromanging *******s with their nose up my butt the whole time (DSD Clerk), afternoon shifts always had deptment heads annoying me (bagger/cashier). Such a pain.

Their still riding the micro-managing train at my store. All this hourly walk and fresh by five, and new good close sheets and what not. It is truly a pain in the ass. It's like you can barely get anything done now without having to face and condition things every 5 seconds on top of everything else you have to do. Not to mention having 2 grab and go's in deli now as well as taking over the salad bar from Produce...ugh, I'm sorely craving the 3:30 to 11:30 in the morning hours. Just too much ish throughout the rest of the day lately. >_<
I prefer the closing shift. 12:30-9 or 1:30-10. Most people who end up with the closing shift complain about the mess that is left from the opening and mid-shifts. Morning shift as to prepare the store for the day, make sure CAP is done, make sure displays are filled, make sure hot foods are ready, make sure all mark downs are don, dis card everything that is out dated, and serve customers, Mid shift comes in during the busiest hours and has to keep the displays filled, serve customers, keep things wiped down, do back stock, etc. Night shift comes in and serves customers, keeps hot foods fresh, then cleans up the mess in their department at the end. I'll do the closing shift any day.
I always liked the closing shifts. You get there when its busy and hopefully running smoothly, as the night goes on you see the busyness end....and you start "closing".....and then poof....no customers and hopefully you have satisfaction in a clean department....etc
