I didn't think working at kroger would be as bad as it is... but it is

My position is a bagger, and from day one I have hated it.  Literally every time I see a customer come up to checkout with a EXTREMELY huge order, I want to go outside and get carts. Why? Because I get no help from the checkers who literally will stand there and watch me suffer as i'm trying to bag and give me the "HURRY THE **** UP" look. No help just watch. It's like that with nearly all checkers. Oh! If its busy and there is customer after customer with big order, I STILL get no help. Seriously there are times when I wish I could stay outside and get carts until my shift ends, but even that is daunting, where I live its nearly 97 degrees on a normal day, so i'm sweating like crazy getting carts while I get to see people get in air condition cars and drive off, then after I put one stack of about 6 carts back I come back into the air conditioned kroger, ONLY to have to go right back out to get more carts because they don't want you standing around doing nothing. You would think "Don't you have times when you are scheduled to go out?". NOPE! It's literally when there are no carts in the cart zones or when a customer complains are people sent out and I work at one of the big krogers where people come in all the time so there is never a reprieve. Speaking of heat there is barely any air conditioning in the store, our store is built like this, Window, take about 6 steps, checkout lane; So all the heat I literally feel all the time.

Then you have bagging itself,in which people literally will complain about NOTHING.

You put some Milk and Cereal in one bag. No cold with none cold. Because the milk will dampen the cereal box. Never mind that the the actual cereal is in a plastic bag. Or my favorite when they literally only have 2 items both of which aren't supposed to be in one bag and you need to make a choice of 2 bags or just one. Putting them in one is just the worst thing anyone could do

Oh Let's not forget...

"I brought my own bags, they don't stand up right, one bag is insulated, one is for produce, one is for another house and I have an overstuffed cart and I might not even give you the bags at all until the very end."

I don't know about other stores but at mine cashiers are treat baggers like slaves.

Cashiers, WE AREN'T YOUR SERVANTS, YOU NEED SOME RECEIPT TAPE!? GET IT YOURSELF! ALSO, DON'T GIVE US YOUR GO BACKS AT THE END OF YOUR SHIFT AND ASK US TO DO THEM "REAL QUICK", NO, I WILL NOT GET YOU ITEMS FROM THE STORE SO THAT YOU CAN PUT THEM IN THE BASKET AT YOUR SIDE BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO BE "SHOPPING ON THE CLOCK", NO I WILL NOT TAKE YOUR COLD ITEM BACK BECAUSE THE DEPARTMENT YOU KEEP CALLING ISN'T RESPONDING, WHEN ITS SLOW, TURN YOU LIGHT OFF AND DO IT YOURSELF. YOU DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO EAT BREAKFAST, DO NOT ASK ME TO GO GET YOU SOMETHING FROM THE BAKERY SO THAT YOU CAN FILL YOUR STOMACH UP.

This is the constant thing that happens at my store and i'm to the point where I just want to cry. I have tried to suck it up hoping the it will get better but I know.. that it won't... ever.

Yeah, I get that you will not take back cold items because the department the cashier continues to call is not responding, but the cashier cannot leave the register.

Someone has to take back the cold items.

Otherwise that is considered shrink.

When i was a bagger i got one checker absolutely LIVID. We, or i should say I had this HUGE order that would put Mount Everest to shame. After the checker rung ut up they started on another order. I had to bag the entire order all by myself with the customer helping out where they could. After it was done the customer thanked me and the checker said "No, problem." Customer said "i wad talking to your bagger becaue they bagged my order almost enirely by tbemself." I replied with " Not a problem. I do this ALL the time. Im used to it." Customer left (got a $30.00 tip). Checker. Was. PISSED. I, A lowly bagger had overstepped my bounds and forgot my place in Kroger heiarchy.

Needless to say, j hardly bagged for that checker again. Yes. Theyre STILL pissed at me. And yes. They REFUSE to help bag unless they have no bagger whatsoever.

Damn, what a pussy.  However, I do agree that it's not your job to do a cashier's personal shopping for them. Just tell them no.  Then tell them they've got a lot of nerve for asking you to.   It's also not your job to do go backs unless a manager or your supervisor tells you to.  The one exception to that is anything perishable.  In that case, it is your responsibility to make sure it gets put back before it can go bad.  Don't call the department and ask them to come get it.  You'll be ignored.  As a bagger, you can easily stop what you're doing and take a package of ground beef or a carton of ice cream back to where it belongs.  The people working in the store don't have time to run up front every time something from their department has to be returned.  They're all too busy trying to keep the shelves filled.

The cashier should be helping bag, you don't have to do their reshop or shop for them, but jeeze everything else is just you whining about doing your job.

Don't ever mix cold foods with other groceries. That will make the cold foods warm faster. That's bagging 101.

Yes it is your job to get receipt paper if they don't have any.

Yes it is your job to take back cold items. Cashiers can't just leave their register, especially if there's a line (oh sorry customer. I have to take this ice cream back because my bagger is a prima donna), and if they let it sit their the product will go bad. It's ridiculous the cashier even pages departments frankly, they should immediately hand it to you to bring it back. I'm certain the perishable departments already have enough to do without being constantly called to the front to bring back one item. I don't think I've ever heard a cashier page a department for reshop in my store.

Yes you are practically slaves to the cashiers. You're the front end bitch who has to do all sorts of tasks because everyone else their own positions and tasks they have to take care of. That is your job just like it's the cashier's job to stay at the register and check people out.

Really, Bagging is the easiest, nicest job in the store and if you ever move up you're going to change your tune about how awful it is real fast.

Yeah, i'm sorry but i'm not going to leave my department and walk halfway across the store while in the middle of baking, or decorating a cake, or whatever, to pick up one random reshop that some high school kid wants to complain about.

Don't like it, prove yourself and get out of the front end. I'm not saying baggers don't work hard (some of them at least), but the fact is, you are at the bottom of the totem pole.

Sorry, OP. Everything you listed, IS your job. Except doing personal shopping for a cashier. Who else do you think would do go-backs? That's front end's job, i.e yours.

Damn TROLL you are one jealous creature arent you. anyways im bored with you now TROLL. Bye.

Back on topic: OP,  yes checkers SHOULD help baggers bag orders if its needed. Gets the lines down quicker, however perishable reshops IS the baggers responsability to put back. Restocking checkstands IS the baggers responsability. You wouldnt get away with that at my store. our Checkers would tear you to pieces.

Lol this bagger sounds like half the bagger kids at the store I worked at.

No, I don't have the time to run all the way to the front of the store and grab that one carton of milk or whatever when I had (depending on the day)shelbyville,  frozen, dairy, or dry, no just ... no. Like it or not, baggers are on the bottom of Kroger hierarchy, like others have said, and like it or not, they ARE basically everyone's errand boys.

However the cashiers can be dicks, and them asking you to shop for them is BS, and I would have told them to sod off. I had a select few cashiers I would help when I got called up (before I stopped going lol), and I had a few that I wouldn't because they wouldn't help with large orders.

I do agree though, some of these cashiers need to get off their high horse as well. Baggers are at the bottom of the totem pole like i said, BUT... they also are an important part of the store... the bagger is not the personal assistant of some old cashier either.

Yep, all of this.

I worked in nutrition, and sorry but I was WAY to busy to stop what I was doing just to go and get a carton of milk or a cup of yogurt a customer didn't want.

I also will say you had better be glad you don't work at my former store, our employees and cashiers would have also torn you a new one.

With all the jobs out here, you're gonna' stay a bagger?  I wouldn't do it.  Did that work for my car and went to something better.
