Look at it this way. Not everybody can work in floral. They have to take classes on floral arrangements and other stuff. You can't just throw flowers in a vase and expect it to look good. So the people who know how to do the work have to stay in floral. Produce is more manual labor. You're basically just filling product. Yeah, there's the bit about culling and rotation but that's pretty straightforward. You see a rotten spot on a tomato you throw it out. Bakery department is the same way. Not everybody can decorate cakes or bake bread. So you keep those people who know how in the department.
One of our florists occasionally gets scheduled a day in produce, but not often. And while I agree with that last anon (I myself do *not* have an eye for floral arrangement) that means that they need to keep the floral department staffed with *posted hours* for when customers should no longer expect someone to be able to help with flowers

Amen to the "posted hours" idea! Anyone out there hearing this??? Maybe a little clock on a cardboard sign that says "Closed...Will Return at 9 AM" or something like that...Maybe the other side says "Out To Lunch"?
You're right in that not everyone has an eye for arrangement...Maybe a self-service area with wraps, tissue, ribbons and bows so the customer could do their own bouquets, perhaps...Many customers will come up and just ask for the materials, so they can do it themselves, too...
I will also say that we were fortunate, at one time, to have a floral guy with produce experience...That generally doesn't happen too often...Sadly, he transferred to a store closer to his house, but he was one of the best we ever had!

Well, that's a disaster just waiting to happen. While we're at it, have them go over to the bakery and decorate their own cake. Then, stop by the meat department and let them cut up a whole ribeye into steaks.

I never said it was a GOOD idea, but SOMETHING has to be better than the craziness we have now...There just aren't enough associates to go around at night to deal with floral and produce at the same time...and it keeps getting worse!
By the way, my own mother used to decorate all her own cakes for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, etc. back in the day when we were younger...She didn't need a manual and I think they tasted a lot better than the store-bought ones, but that could just be a personal preference...She also didn't like to spend the money when she could just do it herself...Quite a tightwad, I guess you could say...

Not really. We've had customers do their own bouqets at times. Hey, of they mess up, thats on them...their problem, not ours. And whats wrong with customers doing some things themselves if they are able and can?
I've never worked in a store with a florist that helps in produce. But my division also does enough in floral sales in most stores for the florist to always be busy.
The division standard is floral to be open 8am to 8pm.
Oh that would be great specifically in bakery when we close at 9pm in my division...However we have a particular co manager that doesnt care about hours of operation and says you still have to serve the customer even if you are scheduled to 10pm... so now all the closers are scheduled from 1p-9p and they have to deal with the unhappy customers
