U better hope your store manager likes u or else be prepared to have all the work pushed on u and spending 12 plus hours at the store trying to fix the depts, remember u are on salary so your dept heads and full timers are actually making more than you hourly
A. Are you looking simply for more money? Than don't do it. Be a dept. lead; as the above respondent said, they make more $$.
B. Are you looking at long term career goals, with experience you can transfer to virtually any other retail (and even non retail) business? Then Kroger co manager just may be your 'in'. But as was also stated, it is salaried, so prepare to sacrifice away about 90% of your life. Seriously.
I got a guy I know who's the Meat department head and wants to become a manager. I told him it's salaried, meaning the majority of your life is wasted away working 12+ hours a day and he doesn't care. Just wants the title. I don't understand to be honest. Meat department heads make bank, especially if it's a marketplace store or medium size one. Don't waste your time with it. I see managers upstairs stressed the **** out ALL the damn time. Being bullied and scolded by the district managers. Ain't worth it!

Your guy likely has narcissistic tendencies and almost physically needs to push around and control people. Given everything you detailed to him about that job (and you're 100% correct), and he still wants it, that's the only explanation there is. I don't understand people like that. They all seriously need dick kicked

He kind of has that attitude. Him and the assistant manager in the department. He said," Might have to go to school for two years, but I want that position." I'd never go to school just to work at kroger being a salaried slave. That's why I salute my store manager. He's a cool guy, one of my favorite ones, but the look of his face every morning coming in having to deal with that bull****--argh, no thanks.

There are three types of managers. all with one thing in common: they're smart enough to do the job. After that, the groups are as such:
1. The ones who just want more money and better career options. They're usually cool and fun to work for, but get crushed under the pressure the fastest. These are my favorites just cuz they're the most likeable.
2. Same as 1., only they have an advancement agenda. They usually end up in mid-high level district/regional positions. Semi ass holes.
3. The socio-pathic f u c k e r s who genuinely love to punish and control and torture people. That's really all that needs said about them. They're the ones you cheer hardest for when karma finally catch they ass

My first store manager was number 1, but stayed at that store for 11 years until he got a better, more productive high volume store making a ton of more. 2nd store manager was number 2, but a little bit of 3. Very condescending and tend to look down on you if you were average, never motivated night-crew. 3rd isn't listed here, but he was motivating, however lacked skill to run a store and came off as a sergeant rather than a general. 4th manager, number 2 & 3 to the FULLEST. Got so bad that all the good people left because of the *******. Pushed extreme unrealistic goals and burnt all department managers out. 5th manager, which is current is number 1, but if you push him he'll be a 2, but never seen it. Very very empathetic, which you don't find much in Kroger management.
