I was told today January 15th 30 stores in the Atlanta division will be closing over night. What is the reason they decided to do this? In the town I live in we have allot of theft over night and we are the only 24 hr Grocery store. I noticed for awhile there has been a button at the front door. I was thinking it was some kind of doorbell. I was wondering why it was there and now I know I think they knew they were going to start closing it's for employee's that come in so someone can unlock the door.
We used to close at midnight when I first started working at my store. Then we became a 24-hour store. There was some theft going on at one point and now except for the overnight crew we close at a certain time. It's deja vu all over again.

We have always been 24/7 364 days a year. I personally think this is a good thing at our old store down the road they would close every few months to wax the floors. At this store as far as I know we have only closed one time and that was to set up new registers or it could have been to set up Q-Vision. I am glad they will start closing it will just take awhile for people to get used to it and it might be busier in the mornings now or might now it's mostly loosers that come shop overnight I live in a ghetto town so it's pretty bad club ass ghetto booty shakers come in over night.
All the stores in my district that used to be 24 hours have been closing at 1am for the last year or more now. I assumed it was about stopping theft too.
My store closes at 1AM. 11PM is when cashier service ends. The only 24 hour store that was near my old house closes at the same 1AM hour and in the Atlanta division I think most stpres stop cashier availability at 11PM. So I am a but confused as to the stores closing overnight. The only employees in my store after 1AM are the stockers and our security guard that leaves at 1:30AM
Most likely it was decided by the new Division President, basically any way to eliminate shrink and not lose sales will dictate all decisions. While overnight sales were not a lot, the provided a resource for the community. Yes, theft does occur overnight, but a lot more happens in the day time. Another factor is it allows the night crews to "work faster", because they don't have to worry about customers. At some point I wouldn't be surprised if they just make all stores 7am-11pm and said its easier to staff and not lose sales.
Who cares about community resources? The shareholders need money; Kroger isn't a charity. Might as well weep about food desert nonsense.
Massive amounts of theft happen during the daytime, sure, but that's when you make your money. My store closes at midnight, and I'm not convinced that we are consistently profitably after 11:00 pm. And during the winter, maybe not even after 10:00 pm. If we're already in the hole just by staying open, and then lose up to a few hundred dollars on top of that every night from addicts and homeless, it starts to add up real quick.

I agree with everything except your callous drivel about 'food deserts'. That's a real thing. One of the four Krogers in my town closed last summer over rampant theft, and now there's an entire populace of elderly, disabled and other wise transportationally handicapped people scrambling to get to one of the remaining stores. --And no, there's nothing else close by to replace the failed store.

Food deserts is not a real thing. Those people will be ok too
They are just getting ready for the new program to roll out. Almost all departments will be going overnight. Our store is the next to start this. Not sure of all the particulars but departments included are dairy, drug/gm, meat, and produce. Trust me i have no idea how they think this will work. My department alone they will have to completely hire me a new staff and probably a new head clerk and back-up bc im not working overnight. Ill walkout the door.
I was under the impression that at least in the Atlanta Division that they were trying to transition to at least 1AM closes. The 24 hour store that used to be near me also had 24 hour fuel center but that was the first to close at 11PM due to safety concerns as there was only one employee in the fuel center cage at any one time
Stores in colorado have been closed at midnight for almost 2 3 years now except for a handful of stores, prob to deter theft
Hey, I'm in CO, too! And yes, theft is definitely the reason our stores shut down. They'll tell you it's "to protect the employees" from the drunks that wander in, but really it's the theft. It's worse than you probably think.

You are correct. I also work in the Atlanta division and yes all stores will be transitioning to Non- 24 hours. Currently we are 24 hours, but starting in January we will close at 1am. I really think they are going to this schedule for stores is for the new program that is starting to roll out in the Atlanta division. Almost all departments will go overnight stocking. We are the next store to begin this program. According to our store manager the departments include GM, dairy, meat, and produce and of course grocery. Trust me I have no idea how they expect this to work with us all overnight and no one here to help customers and fill shelves during the day. They will have to hire an entire new department for me bc no one is gonna work overnight.

If I am asked I might try out working overnight. I am a Utility Clerk and it may be easier to clean up overnight than the daytime.
