I work for Giant Food in the northeast. I am the only full timer left on night crew. The night lead makes 4 bucks less than me, has no benefits and is part time. Turnover is near 100%. I'm just wondering what working fir a union shop is like.

Just about the same at Kroger, but a night lead making 4 dollars less? DAMN. Our leads make about 50 cent more. Overnight Grocery Manager makes 4 dollars more than me.

It sucks! You pay the Union each week to guarantee you have a job, but you get threaten constantly that you will get wrote up, suspended, or fired if you don't do what someone else is suppose to do. The Union says they'll do something about it, but does nothing but talk to them. You file a grievance and it gets ignored. Your not guanteed 40 hours unless you've worked there for more than 5 years, and the pay sucks.
It's great-if you have a dispute with a manager and call in the Union, they back you up. They did for me when I got a write up that was determined not to be valid
Working for a union store is slightly better (for some). My manager makes $.65 more than me, gets full time, and gets terrible benefits. Whereas, it might as well be impossible for anyone in my department to get full time as such a thing hasn't happened in 7-8 years.
Otherwise, the union is mostly useless.
One problem is that union dues are crazy. We are talking something like $500-735 a year for a union that won't even pick up their phone.
