Scheduling here really sucks. Kroger HATES set schedules. As a new cashier without any seniority, you are left with the shifts no one else wants. These are mostly closing shifts, but also include the randomly selected leftovers. These shifts are then set in stone. If you have events in your life that happen at regular times (classes, picking up your kids, church, AA, court mandated anything), you are completely ****ed. Many of these weeks will only be twelve to twenty hour weeks because **** you. If it was important for you to pay bills, you should have gotten a better job.
The pay scale is silly. It's completely outpaced by minimum wage increases. I was at or within a couple bucks of minimum wage until about the 5 year mark. I'm pretty dumb. Except, my state got its act together and minimum wage increases are skyrocketing past the pay scale. In the city to the north, minimum wage is going to hit $15.50 in 2021, or almost a dollar more than management is making now. That is hilarious. How is that going to work out?
Full time is impossible, no matter how hard working you are. The only way to get full time is to get promoted to management. This is problematic for a couple reasons. They don't get set schedules either, close-opens are frequent, and AFEM pay is only $.65/hour more than topped cashier pay.
If anything, working hard is actually a mistake. If you work too hard, they can't afford to replace you. This includes promotion or changing departments. You will be trapped in your position, with more work for no benefit, and you will be continuously hassled and threatened to keep it up while everyone else slacks circles around you until management changes. In fact, if you slack hard enough, you might even earn the supreme reward of being sent to Slack Island (aka the offsite fuel center).
The amount of shoplifting is absolutely crazy, but it doesn't matter because no one is allowed to do anything. LP is only for monitoring and harassing employees. YOU GOT A RECEIPT FOR THAT ****ING WATER BOTTLE!?!??!
Benefits are **** and worse every year. It's downright impressive how expensive the union is for how little they do.
