Bagger to Cashier??

Obviously, no one wants to be a bagger forever. How long does it take for a bagger to get promoted to cashier?

It's funny, cause when I was hired, I went straight to being a cashier. Now I'm a Uscan attendant.

Maybe things are different in your division, but I don't think there's any sort of hierarchy when it comes to front end positions. Especially considering we're all paid the same. Bagger, cashier, Uscan attendant, office help. All paid the same. All just a different task to do on the front end, all have their pros and cons.

All it takes is just one hint of interest to your CSM and bam, you're in there. Want to be a cashier? Bam, you're there. Want to do Uscan? Bam, you're there. Service desk? Bam!

All the new kids at our front end have done pretty much everything. They've bagged, they've cashiered, done Uscan, and some are doing the service desk right now.

Do you have the Utility Clerk position at your store? If so you might want to do that. I don't bag as much as I did previously (despite my store saying a Utility Clerk is a bagger position-most contracts have the jobs separate.)

At my store, baggers almost never become cashiers.

Thing is, though, is that almost no baggers want to be cashiers anyways, and the ones that do find themselves in a difficult spot.

Lousy baggers aren't going to be trusted with cash handling and increased customer engagement.  This is the issue with our one and only bagger that wants to be promoted.

Moderately good baggers probably would get be able to get promoted, except they all move to departments because cashiering obviously sucks.

Great baggers are incredibly difficult to come by, so they might be trapped as a bagger unless a department is so impressed as to poach them.  But it doesn't matter anyways as great baggers generally have enough initiative to get a better job as soon as they turn 18.

Do you have the Utility Clerk position at your store? If so you might want to do that.

My store likes to "promote" the worst courtesy clerks to utility clerks.

Now waaaaait a minute, you sure? Careful, that guy's a hot genius---hell, he even uses words like 'hierarchy'!

To describe how, for his nuclear scientist I.Q., he's still a cashier biggrin

Baggers and cashiers do start out at the same pay rate in our division.

They just top out at a lower rate. So while he's not completely right, he's not all wrong either. Both cashiers and baggers are hired at $10 an hour in Cincy/Dayton div.
