Yeah, let's cover that for a sec. We all know what t w a t s customers can be; no matter how good things are in the store for them, they're still going to find things to bitch about..

But.

As a customer myself (I am blessedly OUT of the retail game for a few sweet years now), y'all aren't helping yourselves when almost every time I come in to a Kroger, I see everyone standing around talking, or phone scrolling, or worse-----I actually need something, approach an employee, and they dart off like a gekko lizard.

And then I come on here and see everyone bitching about how miserable their jobs are. JUST SAYIN'. . . . . .

Not everyone.

I enjoy my job.  I don't have any complaints.

I only use phone as a watch and in case of 911 type emergency.

I gladly help customers whenever the opportunity arises.

I know what you mean.  BUT, the employees that stand around all the time and scroll their phones and seem to have plenty of time to gossip are, I would be willing to bet, in most cases are NOT the same types of employees that come on this site and complain about how stressed they are, how the store is operating with a skeleton crew, and how they don't have enough hours given to their depts to get everything done to Kroger standards.

Those lazybones employees are the ones who DO know how to scroll facebook, play stupid games or stand around gossiping, but have no interest and/or understanding or knowledge about going on this website and actually having an intelligent discussion about work issues.

Also, here are some questions:

1) What time of day are you usually seeing these employees standing around? Are, you not sure they are not just on break or lunch, and not clocked in?

2) Is the store busy/crowded?  If you come in the store on a slow day (like Tues or Wed) you might catch some of the employees, esp front end, with some actual down-time. Not like the super-busy days when things are truly hectic and everyone is having trouble getting all of their tasks done on time.

3 Which departments are most prone to this, in your opinion?  All of them?  Or mostly front end?

It could be that they know you're a pain in the neck every time you come in the store and they don't want to deal with you.

Dont like it? Then go somewhere else. My game of fortnite on my phone is more important than your self entitlement and worthless needs. Use your SMART phone to locate items.

Well this customer gets it. It is very sad how most of these associates are lazy and good for nothing piss oof employees. They dont smile they dont know where items are in the store the dont stock the shelves. Hell now they dont even get the free Friday items ready. They just leave it in the back room and just discount the price nex week! They need to VALUE US!! We contribute to their tiny paychecks weekly. Just ungrateful humans/animals

Lol, I hear ya, I remember dealing with creeps like that myself, and that's exactly why I try hard not to bother anyone unless I have to. Btw: to those of you who are actually working, props to you. You're the best!

As others have mentioned, there could be a legit reason why someone is on a phone. I will add another one: More and more managers communicate with their people via texts. It's faster than walking to a phone and paging them, then stand there to wait for them to come up or call them.

I have seen people "being on a phone'' while walking through the store, in hopes, that this will make it clear he/she is on a break.

Ofc, there are people on a phone when they have no business being on a phone.

But to be honest, I have never seen anybody dart away after they are approached. Usually we are on a lookout for PITA customers and we make ourselves scarce before they even see us. But for majority of customers, we do everything we can to help them.

If this happens to a customer often, they could maybe evaluate their own behavior. Do you greet the clerk politely, ask what you need nicely? If you are told that we don't have that product, do you believe that or do you insist on us wasting our and your time to go back to check? Just a thought.

And one more thing. We can be walking through the store, in the uniform, while we are not on the clock. Meaning, we are not working at that moment, either before or after we clock in/out. If someone seems to not be overjoyed when you ask them for help, please take into consideration that the person is NOT WORKING at that moment. We are not allowed to work while off the clock, plus we are most likely shopping for ourselves on our way home, anxious to get out of the dodge asap. Don't take it as an insult or anything personal. Simply find another worker who will help you. And before you say, that in time it takes me to tell you all this I could just help you, please also consider, that I probably already helped a few customers with easy questions and you need help with something that's not an easy answer, or we simply don't know the answer.

This is not a direct answer to OP, who seems to be a nice person, but rather something in general.
